Trump Begins to Institutionalize Homeless Veterans, Stripping Them of Their Legal Rights and Confining Them to State Hospitals.
President Trump identified homelessness as a priority during the 2024 presidential campaign and promoted it last July in an executive order that called on agencies to use civil commitment to move homeless people into “long-term institutional settings.”
The National Homelessness Law Center accused the Trump administration of using homeless veterans as “political pawns,” warning that the initiative risks stripping veterans of their rights and autonomy rather than addressing the root causes of homelessness.
“This unprecedented partnership between the Department of Justice and the Department of Veterans Affairs does nothing to address homelessness or to help people access the quality care that all people deserve,” the NHLC said in a statement. “Instead, the Trump Administration is using homeless veterans as their latest political pawn to dehumanize all homeless people while ignoring the real cause of homelessness: the fact that the rent is too high for a growing number of people.”
“The Trump-Vance administration is pursuing policies that would push hundreds, if not thousands, of veterans into institutions and court-ordered guardianships,” said Representative Mark Takano, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
“Guardianship should always be a last resort, after all less restrictive options have been exhausted, to ensure veterans’ rights are respected,” Mr. Takano said.
