Growing up, there was this one event of airstrikes, after warning the population when we had to flee..
They burned entire forests and all the animal life..and all the farm animals, donkeys, chicken, cows, goats... everything was burnt.
We cameback to complete waste land. We did the right thing by leaving, otherwise I wouldn't have survived and farmed new lands and served new lives.
They, though, can hire locals to take care of their animals. They don't have to let them starve.

Yes, animals and forests are never factored in when Americans go to war.
Agent Orange was a potent herbicide/defoliant, a 50:50 mixture of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T contaminated with the dioxin TCDD, used by the U.S. military to destroy jungle cover and crops during the Vietnam War (1962–1971). Over 11 million gallons were sprayed, causing severe, long-term health issues—including cancer, diabetes, and birth defects—in veterans and Vietnamese civilians. There was no account for the livestock and forest animals that suffered and died.

@sree251 No, it was not a US or NATO airstrike.
They don't warn locals in Africa before airstrikes. They just drop them and kill everyone in the parameter.
The airstrike I mentioned was during the black decade in Algeria. The National army VS Islamist militants called the GIA.
The US did aggravate the war though. Back then the US used to support Taliban in Afghanistan and the GIA recieved training in Afghanistan..and contained many El Qua da members.
Europe was also indirectly and directly contributing to the war too, in several ways.
This is way before the rest of the world started talking about Islamist terrorism. Back then the US was focused on supporting whatever militant groups that fight against Russia and its allies.

Yes, the US did support militants groups from Algeria going to Afghanistan to fight the Russians (USSR). Those Algerian militant groups will now be waiting to join Iran to fight the US. And no doubt, the Russians will return the favor and support them to fight the US.

It was the Algerian National Army. Most of our resources are invested in our army. We rely on buying technology and weaponary from China and Russia.
They bombed the mountains and warned us before to leave. It was impossible to win battles without heavy casualties in those forests and caves. The airstrikes were the best option to get rid of the militants hiding there.
France wasn't in support of the algerian generals back then and benefited from the war too.
The algerian groups in afghan returned to algeria during the black decade. And one can argue that the remnants are all over the region. Our country is safe for now but our borders aren't. And the army still has much work to do.

You don't think the Algerian army is supported by the CIA and the DGSE (French foreign intelligence agency)?

You don't think the Algerian army is supported by the CIA and the DGSE (French foreign intelligence agency)?
You may not be familiar with the fact that we currently have an extreme political crisis with France because of our semi-military decisions..and the refusal to let them reign over our economic interests. It is complicated, there are other factors at play.
The crisis is so bad that at some point they threatened to nuke us last year.
The Algerian Army is not one entity, just to be clear. But it is one entity when it comes to how we feel about France.
Algeria also doesn't muddle with the CIA. Our constitution, until 2023, was against both foreign interventions and intervening.
For the first time in decades last year we hosted some of your military officials. It was an exception because of a north african military event.
After Iran, we are actually seen as a potential threat, because of our stances about Palestine, subsaharan africa, western sahara... etc.

Yes, China and Russia maintain strong, strategic, and historically deep partnerships with Algeria, providing significant military, economic, and diplomatic support. Russia is the primary supplier of Algeria's military equipment, while China is a major investor in infrastructure and economic development, with both nations supporting Algeria's interests in North Africa.

Yes, I was not familiar with Algeria's current situation. Thanks to you, I am studying up on it now.
Neither France nor the US have the guts to nuke anyone, not anymore.
I am sure there are political factions within Algeria.
Algeria may not meddle with the CIA. It's the CIA and the DGSE that meddle with Algeria.
The US will continue meddling in Algeria and foment trouble among Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Mali, Niger and Mauritania. This is our excuse for staying in Africa to counter China's Belt and Road initiative.
Yes, Algeria has an Arab Muslim population and backs the Palestinian right to their homeland. Algeria does not recognize the Israeli state.

How do you feel about the French influence in Algeria? Bad as they are, to my mind, the French do have a positive cultural influence in the places they colonized. Granted, I am a westerner and am biased when it comes to aesthetics and food. I have not been to Algeria but had a neighbor, a university professor, who was a French national. He was an Algerian Berber who migrated to France, and had American citizenship. The countries that the French made culturally beautiful, in my opinion, is Vietnam, Morocco, Lebanon. I am sure Algeria must be similarly impacted. What is your opinion on French cultural influence on Algeria? Do you speak French?
Yep.

I am kabyle, Touareg and Jewish.
I grew up speaking Tamazight languages, French then Arabic, English..etc in school. When I got to live with my Jewish Turkish grandma, I learnt about that side of my heritage and acquired her languages too.
France was ruthless in Algeria because Algerians did not assimilate. They killed one million and half Algerians during the war. It was as bad as they talk about Hitler.
The reason we kabyles speak French is our ability to pick up languages and our need for survival. Not because we accepted the invasion. Just like we speak Arabic and other languages.
France granted education to exceptionally intelligent kids back then. The standards were so high and the goal was to turn Algeria French. They suppressed and sabotaged other existing cultures. They created class systems and divided between Algerian jews and Muslims. Before France, the two lived peacefully.
My ancestors were among those France granted education to. They were doctors, students..that until the war.
My grandfather was drafted to WW2 to fight against the German. France promised Algerians free rule if they fought in their army. When my grandfather came back from the war, he found his little brother, his father and his grandfather all beheaded by the France. Their heads hung rotting in the central square.
France killed thousands of civilians within days. Thousands who were happy WW2 ended and took the opportunity to celebrate in the streets demanding independence.
My grandfather decided to fight and so did thousands of Algerians.
My grandfather was in charge of an entire segment. And the French found out about his secret mariage to my grandmother. They took her as hostage and tortured her for intel.
My grandmother never experienced strife before then. She was a gentle woman who grew up in better circumstances because of her origin.
She was driven to madness.
My grandmother was a good woman. She had life long mental illness because of it. PTSD and likely bipolar. My grandpa loved her so much and all his life he defended her against everyone, even when she might have been too extreme. Because our people owe her our liberty. She didn't have to make those sacrifices. She could have lived a life of privilige but she chose him and Algeria.
Lot of my tribes members died in the war, schools, hospitals, towns, people..are named after them. I may not be the right person to ask about positive changes.
There are exceptions to the cruelty but they are from everyday french people not from the colonialist establishment.
It is long story. France keeps thousands of our skulls in their archives ,they did nuclear experiments in our Sahara, locals there..we don't even know where they buried the waste and they will never tell us. I might very well be sitting on it right now breathing in radiation. They also conducted illegal chemical welfare against civilians and soldiers alike and they used illegal torture and sexual assaults against prisoners...and burnt people alive. .etc it was horrifying war.
I don't like France and I have lot of healing to do. Yes, lot of kabyles immigrate to France and integrate. Kabyles are multicultural and rarely radicalized religiously..lot of political refugees head to France.
But we still have our priorities wherever we go and our recent complex history. I won scholarships and chose Turkey and Canada because I don't like France, to say the least. I wouldn't have had an ounce of peace there.
I have lot of healing to do. Many of us. I do want that one day I don't feel resentful towards France but it is complicated. The France of today is still attempting to sabotage my home for resources. It makes things more difficult for me to move on.
