President Says He Doesn’t Need Congress Approval for Tariffs

President Trump said he doesn’t plan to ask Congress to approve his new tariff plan.

“I don’t need to, it's already been approved,” Trump said.

The Supreme Court ruling found that Trump’s original tariff plan exceeded his authority without authorization from Congress.

The problem is other tariff laws that Congress has already approved.

One would limit him though to 150 days on one approved bill (Trade Act of 1974). Not certain about the other laws.

All those laws would have to be repealed, which he could Veto.

See both Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act (1930) as well as the Tariff Act of 1930.

Today's ruling only involved the Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977.
