I agree with most of this but if they are talking about government debt (likely since individuals don't run deficits) that can be deceptive since government investment shows up as debt on the balance sheet.

@Kypro I am not disputing that. My point is that talking point about debt and deficits has been used for longer than I have been alive to justify austerity which even the IMF has official said doesn't work.
