Trump threatens to block opening of bridge from Canada to Michigan.

Does Trump have the power to do that? The Gordie Howe International Bridge from Windsor to Detroit is fully funded and paid for by Canada. In his first term, Trump listed it as a priority infrastructure project and released a joint statement after a meeting with Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau on February 13, 2017, reiterating support of the "expeditious completion" of the project. Now, Trump has a change of heart.

On February 8, 2026, Donald Trump threatened to block the opening of the bridge, citing his ongoing grievances regarding trade between the United States and Canada.

@whowasthatmaskedman Canada needs the bridge; otherwise, it wouldn't pay upfront to have it built. Trump just wants a better deal.

@sree251 I accept the facts as you state them. But it does raise a couple of issues. First, Trump now being in office means that America can now not be relied upon to honour deals, agreements and treaties previously set up by any earlier administration. That fact has already been shown with previous trade agreements having tariffs papered over them randomly. Now we could argue the legality, justice or fairness of that itself. But instead I will simply point out that makes America an unreliable partner to deal with on any level.
And, more telling to me. Your closing comment on "Trump just being Trump" says you accept and probably approve of him tipping the checkers board over on any game like a petulant child when he doesnt like how the game is going or his piece of cake isnt big enough..😷

Since when was the US a reliable partner? Just because you don't break any promises doesn't make you reliable. It's just that you were not compelled to. Everybody has a breaking point. Trump is like Humpty and can't take much when pushed off the wall.

Like I said, you need to know who you are dealing with. The Europeans don't fool Trump. He is the same kind as they are, and the whole lot can rot in hell for the things they all did to the rest of the world.

@sree251 The whole idea of the worlds reserve currency is based on the notion that America and its dollar can be absolutely trusted. But your answer is quite correct. America twists and breaks promises all the time. Just openly and more blatently under Trump. And that leads nicely into my point that the world is turning its back on America, and on its dollar. They would rather deal with China. Its not that China has suddenly become the Emerald city. This is purely a measure of the cesspit America has become in international relations and trade.
You claim no one is fooling Trump? It is the rest of the world that is walking away while China watches and happily takes the global trade crown, which Trump pawned.. The only people Trump is fooling are Americans. If you dont see that, then you are vision impaired..😷

Sure, as long as we can afford to play the game as the gang running the casino.

Openly is right. What makes Trump obnoxious to us is that he doesn't give a damn about putting on appearances. He is what Jesus loves about children: their innocence. Trump is truthful in his spontaneous knee jerk responses. I would rather recoil at what Trump does and say than to be sickened by the lies of Ursula von der leyen, mother superior of the EU.

America is the most powerful economy and its dynamism is mind-boggling. This is what Jamie Dimon of Chase Bank said. He isn't concerned about China beating us anytime soon. Despite the fact of our national debt, our selfish, crooked politicians hijacked by self-interest, our culture of credit card borrowings, I am amazed at the energy of cars and trucks speeding down our highways. We may all be heading for the cliff but until then, we are sure moving at a pace no slower than China's. And we are a society open to the best and the brightest who want to come to America. The Chinese may not stupid but they can never beat the best in the world.

We Americans are an obnoxious lot to the rest of the world. Trump also stink but only to the western world mired in a dead ideology. Trump could step over into North Korea. I have a strong feeling he is going to do another step-over, when he makes his state visit to China in April. Trump is a businessman. Money talks and it has no principles. Just like Trump. China, economically, is a good fit for the USA. Only Trump can cut through the think tank bullshit that views China as a threat. American business has been doing well in China since 1970.

@sree251 Clearly we are not going to agree. From your perspective, Trumps actions and attitudes are justifiable. Maybe inside America, if thats who you truly are, you are right. But in a global situation, with a population of around nine billion, your ageing, declining, non self sustaining population of about three hundred million is going to fade away into the background in a generation or two. The numbers dont lie..
You be careful out there..😷
