Looking away from real darkness

Some amongst us find that some words are used too easily. You know what I mean when I mention here only two: Fascist and Holocaust. Have you ever thought that the resurgence of those words and the commentary that they provoke does mean that we're already in a period where darkness is branded on our senses again?

That particular thought brings me to yet another movie which I don't want to view again on a lazy afternoon. It's not as bad as others, The Devil's Advocate included, but The Night Porter needs to be approached with a view to look at human nature honestly and history truthfully. France during the German occupation of World War Two with lots of resistance and few collaboration is false.

Likewise, even the most gentle of people long at times for the most strangest of things. It's something that is there, and abusing it and them is something out of the Devil's workbook alright. Despite that we're hearing people saying that there's no darkness around us now, can anyone explain to me that the latest Spielberg movie this year is yet another sci-fi thriller centered on an alien invasion and feels very much to me like it's about the rapture instead?

Some amongst us will argue that the movie The Night Porter is about the Stockholm Syndrome. Nah, don't kid yourselves like that either. There's much more in the movie as there's much more of the same nowadays in today's politics. Anyhow, here's Dirk Bogard talking about his movie and his experiences during the war entering Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. You'll notice that he talked with some seriousness about the return of darkness already more than fifty years ago

The darkness never left. There have always been individuals who have no qualms about initiating or taking part in tormenting and killing others. The early to mid-20th century was a period in which the darkness was organized on a scale not seen before.

You're wrong on both counts, Boo-Boo. 0%

She isn't new, and I am no Nazi.
BohoBabe · M
@Thinkerbell I mean new to the political forums. She's probably not new to SW, she doesn't have the little "new" sign there.

@BohoBabe

Wrong yet again, Boo-Boo. 🙄

Val not infrequently posts on political subjects.
BohoBabe · M
@Thinkerbell So how come she didn't know you're a Nazi? Have you slowly been backing away from the Cultural Marxism conspiracy posting?
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@BohoBabe

Both of your premises are wrong, as usual. 0%

I am not a Nazi, and both the neo-Nazis and the neo-Bolsheviks can be kept in check as long as democratic institutions remain strong.

@Thinkerbell Hear, hear!

@BohoBabe I've been on EP and here for decades now :) and we're indeed not the enemies of democracy. Just at the opposite wings of the right in politics. But nice doggie nevertheless

@val70 Well I don't know about you, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. But Thinkerbell is fascist and regularly uses nazi talking-points.
val70 · 56-60
@BohoBabe I guess that I'm the best person to know who the fascists and nazis were. Thinkerbell isn't them. But never mind, I'm only here to be myself too :) I'm a Gaullist btw

Whom you call "nazi", Boo-Boo, is anyone to the right of Bernie Sanders or Zohran Mamdani. 🤭

@BohoBabe Here's a good instructive movie for you

BohoBabe · M
@val70 Yes, in that video, Thinkerbell is the dude trying to turn people against minorities.
val70 · 56-60
@BohoBabe Surely not, only illegals. Tom Homan also served during the Obama administration. Was Obama a Nazi?
BohoBabe · M
@val70 No, which is why Homan wasn't doing nazi stuff under Obama.
A lot of the people we're seeing be openly fascist now have always been fascist, it's just that now they have the backing of the government.
It's the same thing with the Republicans as an establishment. The party has been fascist way before Trump, but Trump showed them they can be openly fascist and not lose most of their voting-base.

Quatsch. 🙄

@Thinkerbell Quiet, piggy.

@Thinkerbell I'm not from Bohemia.

Unless this is a joke about how my parents are from Germany, and your ideological ancestors invaded Bohemia and made it part of Germany. In which case, kudos.

Have you forgotten your old user name so quickly, Boo-Boo?

Must be that toxemia again. 🤭
