What do we mean when we say that we defend the Constitution of the United States?

Is the Constitution like the Creator we have faith in? Is it a personal thing that every American swears to defend against enemies both foreign and domestic? Do each of us walk in lock step to defend the Constitution as part of an inseparable nation, or protect it as each American sees fit to do so?
