Interesting essay. A couple of observations if I may? I let other people stick on the labels, so don't worry about them. The definitions change anyway over time as you have admirable illustrated here.
I was about your age when I realised that Far Right and Far Left untimately are indistinguishable. There are plenty of debated around Orwell's 1984 as to exactly who he was warning against: Hitler or Stalin?
Always leave 'room to breathe' - excellent idea.

@ItsMeMorgue Of course my thinking in the 70s was informed by the cultural mores of the time where deviation from the heterosexual norms was only in the early stages of being challenged. I was still in traditional economic Left/Right political thinking and oppression came for both sides. The writer seems to be suggesting that in fact the 'Left' was as oppressive as the 'Right' had been traditionally

@FreddieUK thank you I will admit what I'm doing is nothing new really back in the 60s a lot of people were disillusioned by the left and made a new left I guess that's what I'm doing but with progressivism
anyways like the great Neil Young once said[media=https://youtu.be/PeRVCTiCFls]

@weirdbeatnik Yes...we had a lot of idealism back then too. 🙂 Try not to become cynical...it doesn't help.

Normally I would say it doesn't matter what you call yourself, what really matters is where you stand on the issues. If someone supports Medicare for All, it doesn't matter if they call themself a Socialist, a Social Democrat, a Progressive, what really matters is that they see healthcare as a human right.
Here's the issue I see with your line of thinking.
The Left didn't become culturally conservative. This is the "cancel culture" narrative that was created by right-wing media, specifically on social media which at the time was being taken over by right-wing think tanks. The Left never stopped encouraging dissent and satire. And internal disagreement?! One of the reasons the Left never gets anything done is because we have so much internal disagreement.
Like I said, the labels don't matter nearly as much as the policies and who you vote for. But the false narrative that you're falling for is dangerous in that it led to the rise of the Alt-Right and Trumpism. It could be especially bad now because the Republicans have gone full fascist, and you're saying the Left has "Cultural Authoritarianism." As if the Left wasn't completely correct about MAGA from the beginning.

How the Left Became Culturally Conservative
There was a time when the left thrived on dissent, satire, and internal disagreement. Now, too often, it punishes those things.
When jokes are treated like crimes. When art is expected to deliver the correct moral lesson. When disagreement is framed as harm.

Progressive libertarianism, to me, means:
Social progress without cultural authoritarianism
Individual freedom without corporate domination
Equality without enforced sameness
Justice without ideological dogma

@BohoBabe is that both sides the left and right are pro-establishment and they keep the status quo which is controlled by the powers that be or what I call the deep rich
BohoBabe · M
@weirdbeatnik How is the Left pro-establishment? We want to raise taxes on the rich to pay for healthcare, transportation, and universal basic income.
Why do you think there's no mainstream left-wing media? The billionaires are purposely keeping the Left out of power. Meanwhile, under Trump-Vance, the gap between rich and working-class has only grown.

@BohoBabe by voting for mediocre candidates like Joe Biden or even Obama okay don't get me wrong a lot of people were tricked by Obama I was tricked by Obama until he started bombing other countries

No such thing...
DayattheBeach · 36-40, F
@weirdbeatnik I don't have to read it; they are total opposites. Progressives believe in government having a larger role in solving social issues. Libertarians believe in small government and person responsibility. Libertarians are very close to Constitutionalist.
I know people and organizations like to think they can combine such titles, like naming legislation that takes away freedom 'The PATRIOT Act' but anyone who has an understanding on these matters knows the reality.
Like Democratic Republic... that's another no!

@DayattheBeach look I'm not telling you what to think we're all propaganda everyone and everything is doesn't make it not true or not fake of course but my point is I call myself a progressive libertarian for many different reasons one of these reasons it's just that the left has became too conservative to my taste the only difference is that has politically correctness in it
DayattheBeach · 36-40, F
@weirdbeatnik OK...lmfao...

You sure do use a lot of words to say you want to use offensive slurs and engage in stereotypes.
