How do you define a fascist?

A fascist is a supporter of fascism, a far-right, authoritarian political ideology that prioritizes the nation above the individual, demanding strong central power, forcible suppression of opposition, extreme nationalism, and often racism, with a strong military and state control over society and economy, as exemplified by Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany (the form of it called Nazism).

The term can also describe anyone seen as harshly authoritarian or controlling.

Key Characteristics of Fascism:
Authoritarianism: Rule by a single dictator with unlimited power, suppressing dissent.

Ultranationalism: Intense belief in national superiority and unity, often linked to race.

Militarism: Glorification of the military and use of force.

Subordination of Individual: The individual exists to serve the state or nation.

Economic Control: Strong state regulation of industry and commerce, though often preserving private ownership.

Anti-Democratic & Anti-Liberal: Rejects democracy, liberalism, and communism, viewing them as weak.

Symbolism: Originates from the Roman fasces, a bundle of rods symbolizing state power.

Usage:
Noun: A follower of fascism or someone with authoritarian views (e.g., "He's a fascist").

Adjective: Describing something related to fascism (e.g., "a fascist regime," "fascist methods").

Disapproving: Used broadly to label anyone seen as overly controlling or having extreme right-wing views, even outside strict political definition.

A good book on the Italian form of fascism was written by John Foot, entitled “Blood and Power”.
