The numbers are in. Without tax rebates EV’s are dead. Wait . . . they’re NOT ????



Photo above - the age of affordable, Asian sourced EVs has arrived. To celebrate, Jazz Radio Electro Swing (www.jazzradio.fr) has the hit song "Artichaut" by the band Chinese Man on heavy rotation.

In the United States EV tax subsidies for the rich expired in September 2025. Sales volume immediately drove over a cliff. (see first link below, from Carbuzz)

Let’s be honest about the “rich” part. Those subsidies ONLY kicked in if you were ALREADY paying $7,500 (or more) in federal income tax. For the typical worker/commuter in America, tax kickbacks were never a factor. Except that our own tax dollars were shifted to put money in the pockets of wealthy drivers of Ford F150 Lightning electric pickups (well equipped price:- $95,000 before rebates).

Ford immediately cancelled production of its giant battery/giant price F150 Lightning. VW followed suit and just halted its giant price but tiny battery minivan, the ID Buzz ($75,000 well equipped). Dozens of high-end, insanely expensive electron guzzlers are now threatened with the extinction. If you covet a gazillion watt Dodge Charger or Jeep Wrangler, you had better act fast - those were cancelled too. A couple in bad colors (“Bludicrous”) might still be on dealers lots.

I was set to declare this a tragedy for stupid-rich crowd – and smirkingly say “I told you so.” Then it got even better. EVs are NOT dead. Just the insanely expensive ones that go zero to 60 in 2.X seconds, and burn as many electrons as an AI data center while performing this party trick. If you want a normal sized, normal HP, normal price EV or hybrid . . . those are NOT going extinct. In fact, Hyundai/Kia just posted its best year ever in 2025. Combined US sales volume is up 8% to 1.8 million vehicles.

It's not only battery EVs for Hyundai/Kia of course. Apparently they have dozens of hybrid electrics, in addition to a dozen pure EV models in the $40-$50,000 range. Cars which people who don’t live in Pacific Palisades or Scarsdale NY can afford to buy without being bribed by the US government.

Is this where I insert my recurring snark that government invention isn’t about fixing things? That taxes and price controls are about picking winners and losers. And making the losers pay for what the winners get? There . . . I just said it. EV tax rebates are dead. Now go buy an affordable one.

I haven't seen any Hyundai Kia electrics on the road have you? There are lots of Kias all over the place but they are all ICE here. I did see one Ford Lighning once. I see a fair number of Teslas bur almost no other electrics on the road. Maybe it is just too cold up here in Canada.

@hippyjoe1955 somebody has a Kia EV6 in my apartment building. Theres a guy using a charger at work to top off his Ionic every day.

@SusanInFlorida I live in Alberta Canada. Lots of Kia/Hyundai. I used to own one. Nice little car. I would never run an electric here. Too cold. I like cabin heat when it its 40 below.
