The only moment in NATO history, when article 5 was invoked, was by request of the United States after the september 11th attacks in 2001. And NATO countries responded by aiding the militairy operation in Afghanistan.

Which ended with NATO countries (other then US) having to bury 1073 people that answered the US call. And those are only NATO countries, there are also those countries that allied with NATO and want to join the alliance in the long run.
