Today Canada announced huge military build ups and spending plans to help NATO defeat Russia in the Arctic. Say yes to empire! Do it without shame - you're CANADA. Not guilty,, Canada! It's working.
We all tolerated rich business people. That's what killed us all, that's what is about to make earth a US gas station with military check points. Canada is just another shopper in the mall of America.

@Burnley123 I don't disagree. There is definitely the post WW2 and cold war deference. But something else that makes this pointless is especially since 1991 the combined military might of Canada and Europe could not challenge the US Coast Guard.
And whether we like it or not as someone who comes from a military family the reality is none of that matters if you can't back it up with at the very least the threat of violence.
If we joined forces without it the reality is the US would just say "you and what army."

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow It depends on the metrics but the EU ÷ Canada + UK had combined economic strength similar to the US. Also a uvh bigger population.
As military, no. Though the coast guard comment was a funny. exaggeration.
I think the geopolitical situation is now in three blocks. USA, china and allied and the EU. Brexit notwithstanding, I'm strongly of the opinion that Britain needs to align itself with EU interests against America. Canada is in a tougher bind because I'd geography. But could be included as an auxiliary.
Given how ruthless and ridiculous the trump administration is, a collective response is needed. Politicians are clinging to nostalgia of the US as an ally but it obviously isn't..

@Burnley123 The reality is the US could hurt us more in economic warfare too.
And the EU and Europe more generally is fading into irrelevance. The EU is also nothing more than a franchise of the USA with even less democratic input.
And the EU's entire real economy is based on cheap Russian energy and well Europe committed economic suicide over Ukraine as a show of blind loyalty for the honour to pay tribute to the USA in the form of paying triple for American LNG and making the European energy even more fragile in the process.
Even Germany is being de-industrialized month by month as a result.
Furthermore both the EU and NATO has completely contradictory goals among their own member states.
And sadly the rulling elite just made Bulgaria a vassal of the European Commission.
The Americans have also proven that military force is now part of economic policy that can be leveraged against everyone.
My take is from this we will likely see a BRICS military mutual defense alliance come out of the Venezuela fiasco.
As for what is best for Canada. I think we could do just fine on our own outside of bloc mentalities economically.
Honestly myself I think the most rational thing would be a Canada, European and Eurasian economic cooperation.
But the Canadian leadership is too slavish to the USA, most of Europe still has delusions of still being imperial powers and see right now as a chance to have a rematch of the Crimean War for the British, the Napoleonic wars for France, and WW2 for Germany.
And you have the EU giving outsized power to irrelevant countries like Lithuania, Poland and the Baltic each with delusions of reconstituting Renaissance era empires like the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Objective reality doesn't have any place in this environment.
They all want to settle old imperial scores and demand the US loan them the armies to do it.
This is why strategic military alliances are ultimately stupid. They always go sideways when one member drags everyone into a war and it just makes the wars bigger.
It also makes less relevant members feel like they are superpowers with the power to settle old grudges.
More and more I find myself coming to the conclusion we are likely to see a new global war that will reset the board. Our only hope is that it doesn't go nuclear.
