I wish I could act like this is just Trump, but it isn't, it's the whole West, including Europe. This image illustrates the double standard quite nicely:
The EU always had rhetorical restraint toward the United States for military action in Africa and the middle east, decades worths of hesitation and diluted measures in response to Israel’s conduct in Palestinian territories, and complete absence of any pressure on strategic partners like Saudi Arabia or Turkey, and more recently the UAE despite persistently breaking international law.
For them it all depends on the actor’s alliance value, laws are just a language of convenience, invoked against adversaries, softened for friends, and quietly suspended when enforcement would carry a heavyy economic cost.
