I used to be a grocery checker when real paper food stamps were issued at the post office, very rarely did I see ANY food stamp recipient buy junk food more than a bag of generic chips and a two liter of generic soda, they purchased frugally, a lot of bulk beans and rice, cheap ground beef, a not of generic canned fruits and vegetables because even then fresh produce was up there in price. Fun fact, numerous military E4 and below are on SNAP benefits because the service doesn't pay shit until you get to sargeant.
