$18 billion price tag for mandatory new schools; NYC won’t have free buses and daycare after all?

Photo above - Millionaire candidate Zohran Mamdani rides the subway as a campaign stunt earlier this year. He just announced a subway fare increase, and he hasn't even been sworn in yet. He's also surrendering his rent-controlled apartment to get free lodging in the Gracie Mansion, built in 1799, the mayor's official residence.

Zero for three! During his campaign Zohran Mamdani promised to fire thousands of police, arrest Israel’s PM Netanyahu, and offer free bus rides for everyone, everywhere, all the time. Who WOULDN’T go for this? (insert sarcasta-bang here).

Instead, after winning the election, Mamdani begged the police commissioner to remain, promising no police job cuts; he discovered that mayors can’t arrest diplomats visiting the UN, and raised subway fares. Low information voters are probably outraged.

The big enchilada is no free NYC buses or day care. I bet there are thousands of single moms in NYC who could benefit from this. And thousands of kids who would be warehoused in decaying buildings with inadequate staff ratios because when stuff is free, you get what you pay for.

It turns out all of that money for freebies will be needed to build $18 Billion (with a B) in new schools. And billions more for teacher salaries. Voters were also promised smaller class sizes (no more than 25 rugrats per room) and replacement of buildings with leaky roofs, overflowing toilets, and freezing winter temps. Who knew these things would be important to parents?

I just found out why my New York friend moved from the city to the suburbs, and paid $1,000 a square foot for modest (2K sf) home assessed at $40k annually in property taxes. He did a deep dive on the school districts. His new district already has class size limits and buildings which don’t violate health and occupancy codes.

In America, we can have anything we want, provided we’re willing to pay for it. The problem is, our wants get stoked to the max during political campaigns, and there’s no discussion of how to pay for that stuff.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

He actually hasn't ruled out free NYC buses or daycare.

But that would be inconvenient to point out, wouldn't it?

@SusanInFlorida the interests of those who rely almost exclusively on buses. Free buses will more than make up for a $0.25 subway increase

@SW-User i don't think there's a link as to how much free buses will "save".

however, i'm fairly certain that buses provide tons more pollution than electric subways underground.

@SusanInFlorida what's your point?

Low information voters are probably outraged.

Well Susan, they probably are not outraged at all. Half of them knew he was lying and didn't care.

The other half will continue to HOPE he makes their life better. If he doesn't, it will be the fault of Republicans.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@SusanInFlorida I could vote for more Democrats if they were not all turning progressive and woke.

Many of the classic Liberals have turned to the Republican party.

@DogMan i voted for people with new ideas, which might make things better. i don't care what party they belong to.

right now both democrats and republicans are short of ideas. which is why we have a $38 trillion national debt.
New ideas is a big thing for me. My belief is that the purpose of tariffs is not really to collect tariffs but to correct trade imbalances deliberately created to the detriment of the US. On shoring more business and having trading partners buy more of stuff made in the US. This is resulting in higher GNP which results in more tax revenue which will begin by slowing down and then turning around the deficit. More income is the only true solution to the deficit. Heaven forbid the government take away or reduce any “entitlements”. Who created that dumb name and why are other US citizens and even illegal aliens “entitled” to my hard earned money. Speaking of which the US Code DOES. NOT contain the term “illegal immigrant”. It discusses immigrants in terms complying with the US Code. Immigrants who choose to not follow the US Code are defined by it as ILLEGAL ALIENS

A marxist not living up to their promises? not like that's ever happened before... 🤔
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@wildbill83 i think every candidate for office should be asked a standard list of questions, and held accountable for their answers (recall election if lying)

1 - will you raise taxes? If so, how much and what kind?
2 - who do you intend to pardon, if anyone?
3 - will you grant safe haven to any deposed dictators or drug lords?
4 - do you plan to open any more military bases beyond the 800+ we already have?
5 - who do you intend to nominate to key cabinet/agency positions?

I was planning on taking Amtrak to NYC for free bus rides to see the Christmas sights. He’s screwing me!
Right back at you ma’am
