Why Did I Go to College and the Way Forward

Warning: this is probably going to be a long rant.

So I read this article on Vox (Vox no less!) that I found on the Apple News app last weekend. I believe this article, but it totally pisses me off.

It said the reason Democrats are so unpopular now, the reason we’ve been losing elections, is that for the last roughly thirteen years the party has moved too far to the left. More Americans think the Democratic Party is too liberal than think the Republican Party is too conservative, and it’s not close (I think the margin was like 56% to 42% if I remember correctly). Swing voters, working class voters, and voters without a college education, the kinds of voters Democrats need to win back to win elections, think Democrats are too weak and too woke.

So what do Democrats need to do to win back those voters? We’ve got to sell out our trans friends. Remember that ad, “Kamala Harris is for they/them, Donald Trump is for you.”? Yeah, a ton of people actually fell for that vile garbage. The second most effective message tested by the group in this article was that trans women and girls should not participate in women’s or girls’ sports. A bunch of voters Democrats apparently need would change their votes if Democrats said that. Sorry, trans friends, the important voters are too uneducated to understand you and too stupid to care!

But of course that’s not all. We also have to get used to our broken healthcare system because we have to be against Medicare for all now. Don’t anticipate any progress against school shootings or mass shootings because we have to be against assault weapons bans. Absolutely can’t talk about climate change or the environment, just have to watch the world burn until it’s too late to do anything about it. We have to be tough on crime and tough on immigration (even though that perpetuates more broken systems). It’s what we’ve got to do, because if we don’t do it we get MAGA again.

All of this is making me wonder, why did I go to college? Why did I learn to see things from others’ points of view? I haven’t even used my college degree in any of my jobs, so it hasn’t even made me any more money. All it did was make most American voters suspicious of me. You know, “he must think he’s better than us because he’s got an education.” Now that I know stuff I’m supposed to just sit down and shut up and watch my country do the opposite of what I learned.

@Theyitis Why aren't you teaching English?

Will you find the way forward? Will USA?

@Theyitis You could be teaching English in the public schools. If you had a Masters, you could teach English at colleges.
My first teaching job was English. I loved it.

I'm happy in my job. My degree (business administration) made it possible for me to certify as a substitute teacher in two Florida counties. I'm happy with that job. Made the degree worth every penny.

Of course, the business courses (as well as Macroeconomics, which I excelled at) were a great help in personal financial planning.

(By the way, my degree ALSO makes it possible for me to certify as a real school teacher if I wanted that. But there's NO WAY I would go full tilt and put up with what our teachers are putting up, from the negligent parents and out of control brats. And we have the best teachers in the country. I'm not THAT nice a guy.)

Nobody can answer that for you.

@RedBaron Well it should have been so I could make a difference, that’s what I thought. But it turns out people with a college education are a minority without any political power that everyone’s so damn suspicious of. We have to shut up about what we know and let ourselves be yanked around by the majority that doesn’t have a college education.

@Theyitis Education should be valued for its own sake. You get out of it what you put in.

Nobody thinks the Republicans are too conservative. Today, Republicans are all over the landscape. They can't even agree on lunch. Today Republicans are the LAST of the independents.

Had they not changed their ideology since the Rush Limbaugh days they would have been considered centrists, compared to the far left NAZI lurch of the DemoKKKrats.
