The truth matters — even when it’s inconvenient.

There are people posting obnoxious memes (most memes are) blaming Republicans and Donald Trump for “starving Americans” and “refusing to feed our own people.” Note...I am a Constitutional Conservative; I have problems with both parties.

Think about something for just one second. This government shutdown/showdown isn’t about helping Americans; it’s about politicians choosing illegal (operative word being "illegal") immigrants over U.S. citizens. Full stop.
The Republicans are no saints other, but in this instance I have to put most of the blame on the Democrats absolute hatred for Trump.

We are one of the wealthiest nations on the planet, yet somehow we’re expected to fund unlimited housing, healthcare, education, and benefits for millions of non-citizens before we take care of our own? That’s not compassion, that’s insanity. People who have entered our country illegally are not entitled to those things. Yes, they are entitled to be treated with the same respect as any other human being, but the only housing they should be entitled to is a detention facility while they await being sent back home. Come here legally...got no problem with that.

Democrats, as well as some Republicans, have voted MULTIPLE times to keep pushing the same failed continuing resolutions that prioritize illegal immigration spending while ignoring the spiraling costs on American families. Now, suddenly, they “care” about hungry citizens? No…what they care about is scoring anti-Trump political points. They care about headlines, not households. If they truly cared about the people they post about, they’d fix the border. They’d stop incentivizing illegally entering the country. They’d put AMERICANS first for once. Instead, they’d rather blame Republicans for refusing to fund their chaos.

Here’s the bottom line:
It is NOT the responsibility of the U.S. taxpayer to fund every nation in the world. It IS, however, the responsibility of our elected officials to take care of Americans FIRST. America First should not be controversial. End this idiotic shutdown now. Pay our military; take care of our veterans; feed the homeless. Maybe if we make the path to US citizenship less complex, we wouldn't have as many illegals entering this country. The system is broken; fix it.

Again, there's plenty of blame to go around. If the Republicans really cared as much as they say they do, they wouldn't always cave to the demands of the Democrat Party. Republicans need bigger cojones. Ironically, the toughest Republicans seem to be women. Maybe the men need to take a page from their books. Maybe it's time for both wings of the same bird to put aside their petty crap and remember their oath of office.

It's time for all these self-serving politicians to go...both sides of the aisle need a massive cleaning out. There should be no such thing as a career politician.
I know a lot of people who have been negatively affected by this shutdown. There are many people who absolutely need those SNAP benefits. It's no joke. Both parties need to pull their respective heads out of their respective butts and honor their oath of office for a change, and not their monumental egos.

Today, one day after election day, tRump blamed republicans' poor showing on the shutdown.

Trump argued polls shows the shutdown, which Wednesday set a record for the longest in history, “was a big factor, negative, for the Republicans.”

This pretty much tells us the voting public blames the shutdown much more on republicans, and that tRump understands that is so.

Oh really ?????
Well NYC was about what free stuff did the candidate promise & the public feel for it
@pdockal says
was about what free stuff did the candidate promise
Funny thing, when tRump promised "free stuff" like balanced budgets, cheaper better Obamacare, falling grocery prices, huge economic growth, etc, NYC didn't believe it. What makes you think NYC suddenly lost its skepticism and started believing a montebank??

BTW, I don't live in NYC, but I have a couple relatives who do. How about you??

@ElwoodBlues

People hate trump so they don't believe what he says
Trump never promised FREE
If you followed the rhetoric during the election you would have seen
Mumdovi promised to make NYC socialistic

Obviously you aren't informed like you think you are
@pdockal tRump promised reduced grocery prices, deficit reducing tariffs, and a cheaper and better Obamacare that covers everyone. tRump made his own pie-in-the-sky promises.

NYC was skeptical. They're now voting to say the status quo isn't working for them. Doesn't mean they've lost their skepticism.

Show me where Trump promised free
NYC is promised
Free busses @ $800 Million
Free daycare @ $6 Billion
City owned supermarkets
Free CUNNY education
Free diapers etc for new moms

Doubt he'll be able to keep any promises
Socialism doesn't work

@ElwoodBlues I don’t think so but you might be right. When republicans win the presidency the next election usually goes to democrats. It’s democrats who continue to vote to close the government not republicans
@pdockal You really love being wrong about literally everything.

President can't do anything about the shut down
Only congress can
Maybe do your research before you open your mouth

Really? You think it's against the law for a president to enter into Congressional negotiations???

Although, if your point is that this president shouldn't enter into Congressional negotiations, I can see how republicans might prefer that. Given his track record on the recent 60 Minutes interview - 18 major falsehoods in 28 minutes with a tantrum about crypto corruption edited out - it's understandable that republicans might not want tRump in the room where it happens.

NOPE. What's distressing to me is that the facts here are EASY to check and you didn't do so. There were plenty of expensive shutdowns conducted by republicans against democratic presidents; particularly the two led by Gingrich against Clinton.

1980: one day shutdown under Carter
1981: four day shutdown under Reagan
1990: three day shutdown under Bush 1
1995: six day shutdown under Clinton
1995-6: 21 day shutdown under Clinton
2013: 16 day shutdown under Obama
2018-19: 35 day shutdown under tRump

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow President Trump isn’t to blame. Democrats are holding their constituents hostage. They are robbing them.

Emergency funds for Medicaid are for example a natural disaster. They won’t cover the whole country for a month

Democrat should have insisted on a short term extension while negotiating the affordable care act

tRump himself sees it differently. Wednesday, one day after election day, tRump blamed republicans' poor showing on the shutdown.

Just the opposite.

The ACA needs to be updated to help as many people while saving taxpayers
The reason for the ACA spending cuts was to try to pay for the OBBB tax cuts that benefit the super-rich (Musk & DOGE were supposed to find $2 trillion in cuts; failed to find 10% of that). That's the choice, the tradeoff republicans made when they wrote and passed the OBBB. Billionaires over working people.

You support that choice, @missyann , and I don't.

@ElwoodBlues

Wasn't Obamacare suppose to pay for itself ?
My health coverage went down because of Obamacare
My health coverage costs more because of Obamacare
@pdockal Not exactly. Before Obamacare there were plenty of low-cost "do nothing" policies. You'd get injured, read the fine print, and discover that the policy was capped at half your cost or something. Or you'd find that some "pre-existing condition" caused a denial of any coverage whatsoever.

Obamacare was designed to fix these problems. Obamacare was a set of regulations on insurance policies so that you got what everyone expected from a policy. If you previously had "do nothing" insurance, then sure, real insurance would cost more. If you had good insurance, there wasn't much change.

We absolutely have a YUGE problem with health care costs in this country, and doubtless more can be done.

Note the graph goes 1970-2018.

UPDATE

Infant mortality in 2020
Source: https://ourworldindata.org/us-life-expectancy-low
I include infant mortality to underline that it's a separate statistic not included in life expectancy, and that the US has problems there too.

The ACA imposes new taxes on health insurance companies, medical devices, and high-cost employer health plans.
The ACA makes cuts to Medicare and Medicaid programs, as well as subsidies for prescription drug coverage.
The ACA has led to an increase in overall healthcare costs.
Those who are older or have health problems, have experienced higher premiums under the ACA.
The ACA restricts the types of health plans that insurers can offer, which limits consumer choice
The ACA has imposed a complex set of regulations on the healthcare industry, which can be challenging for insurers and healthcare providers to navigate
@pdockal says

Nope, that's tRumpcare as written into tRump's OBBB.

At present we don't have Obamacare OR the ACA. At present we have tRumpcare.
