It is true that not many people know that it is countries like Lebanon and Turkey that are taking most refugees. But apart from that question you make, there are many wondering also:
1- Why the richest Muslim countries in the area (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar),are taking zero refugees?
2- How many of those coming to Europe are truly war refugees and how many are immigrants for economic reasons? Two complete different cases.
3- Why refugees have always been women, children, and old people, and this time those coming to Europe are 80% young males?
All this reasons are moving lots of us to think this massive influx is not spontaneous but plannef. The goal and the minds behind are not clear yet.

The only answer that I can see is a criminal level of selfishness. That does not mean that we have to do the same however.
2- How many of those coming to Europe are truly war refugees and how many are immigrants for economic reasons? Two complete different cases.
It is sometimes hard to distinguish in this case. If someone can't get a job because of the war is he/she an economic or a political migrant? They are fleeing a war-zone though and this is a new and epidemic problem, caused by a dire political situation.
3- Why refugees have always been women, children, and old people, and this time those coming to Europe are 80% young males?
The statistic is true of those coming to Europe but its not true of internally or regionally displaced people. Simply, it is easier for single young men to travel further than women or children, they have to get through Libya or Turkey after all. Just because they are men or young does not diminish their refugee status in my book though. We should take more anyway and reduce the load on the likes of Lebanon.

What would you do if you were Syrian and had a choice? I know what I would do.

@Burnley123: If I were Syrian...it depends. If my loyalty was clear for or against Al-Assad I would stay to fight for or against him and would try to find a way for them to leave the country. If I had no loyalty to any side, I would try to escape too. To a nearby country to come back as soon as war ends.
But if someone instead of going to a nearby country chooses to go miles away, that person should not be considered a refugee, but an economic migrant.

@Cierzo: Hmmm... but what if the local countries can't cope. The choice seems to be that you stay in a camp or get on a boat.
I'm an internationalist I guess. I see people as equals.

@Burnley123: If the local countries can't cope then it is time for another countries to do it, but being very serious about controlling the identity and nationality of those who come in, and not tolerating any minor offence towards the nationals.
I am anti-internationalist and anti-globalist I guesd.
