In 1946, people in Germany and Poland could be forgiven for saying, "we didn't know". Today, no one can say "we didn't know..."

...all you can say is "We didn't want to know".

This is what Marx really meant with the "first as tragedy then as farce" line. People didn't know how bad Fascism would be the first time, so they can be given some sympathy. This time we know.

Also, the people of Germany and Poland 100% knew at the time.

Letting people say "we didn't know" was just a polite fiction the US, France and Britain allowed so they could exonerate more people who had been open Nazis.
@DealingWithTrouble Not the point, but I get you.
@DealingWithTrouble Not quite true. The Nazis compartmentalized that information even within the Nazi party.

We have General Rommel's journals where he talks about troubling rumours he was hearing from Germany and he refused orders to separate Jewish prisoners.

I'm pretty sure lots of those 1946ers were lying.
They were not forgiven as much as you think they were.

@NativePortlander1970 isn’t Germany STILL paying reparations to Jews ? You think former German chancellor Angela Markel grew up with zero guilt ? That woman’s face looked like she was shamed every day of her life .
@NativePortlander1970 Scared? You should be. Portland doesn't exist anymore, right? Didn't "antifa" (e.g., everyone Trump doesn't like) burn it to the ground?
