Why are they doing this?
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Nightwings

1. Because they can

2. Because they have a sick view of the world
Nightwings · 31-35, F
@FreddieUK I meant what's the actual purpose of it, and what do officials say the purpose is?
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Nightwings I'm not in America, but I believe the claim is that DC is full of crime which can't be coped with by the local police. The Mayor has produced statistics which show this is false. I understand that this is not anything that is asked for by the local people, but it's within the President's power to put state troops onto the streets of a peaceful city. That's his sick view, and he has the power to do it.
Nightwings · 31-35, F
@FreddieUK It is very sick. I assumed the real reason is to protect against protests? Which is why I think they need to protest even harder now, before it becomes impossible. I know there has been some, but they need to do a lot more for their future welfare, and honestly welfare of the whole world; I believe the current American president is going to be very responsible for a possible future world war, if he keeps riling things up like he does now. This all seems really bad, so I'm surprised that so many American people appear to gloss over it as if it's not a big deal.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Nightwings I think your view on a hidden agenda to protect himself against protest has much merit.
@Nightwings The Trump administration is citing unacceptable levels of crime as reason to deploy the national guard to key areas.

This is right after they fired someone for "false crime statistics."

I smell BS.

And as you know, like I said yesterday the 19 states thing.
Nightwings · 31-35, F
@FreddieUK The official reason sounds unnecessary to me, and usually when countries do things like this, it's to keep people from uprising, so that's what it looks like to me. It's crazy because America used to be very different just one year ago, it's happening so fast that people don't react.
Nightwings · 31-35, F
@SinlessOnslaught I hope it's not as bad as it looks, but since weird things are happening in the UK and EU countries too now, it looks to me like everyone is preparing for bad times to come.
@Nightwings Yep. Maybe I will look back and laugh at myself saying this but I truly believe WWIII is coming.

As if my country hasn't brushed our responsibility for WWII under the rug enough.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Nightwings Sadly, you're right. Those who search for simple answers to complex issues have plenty of sinister groups who will tell them what they want to hear. So many people will not look through slogans and comforting untruths in case they find they've been duped… again.
Nightwings · 31-35, F
@SinlessOnslaught I heard that some experts claimed that WWIII might come in circa 5 years from now. I think it's a reasonable worry, it's just hard to imagine. It was also hard to imagine Russia invading Ukraine, even when more and more Russian troops came to our boarders, most Ukrainian people didn't believe it would really happen. They first believed it the same day it happened. 😅

@SinlessOnslaught That is downright ridiculous, kind of funny actually. 🫣
@Nightwings He wore this while signing executive orders
Nightwings · 31-35, F
@SinlessOnslaught Send in the clowns. 🫣
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
H@SinlessOnslaught he is just asking for ridicule. Who am I to disappoint him?

@Nightwings control of money and power
@Nightwings says

Agree 100%. tRump is effectively imposing martial law to prevent anti-tRump protests in DC.

In general the National Guard works for the governor of the state and is paid by the state. So I think (not sure) that only red state governors will send their guard. DC is a special case; they have the whole Congress instead of their own legislature, governor, etc. Another defect in the Constitution.
markinkansas · 61-69, M
@ElwoodBlues ya i can see parts of that.. and next is cities he does not like.. it is going to be a show of force.. i wonder when top military officers start dropping out service in protest ..
@markinkansas Excluding the special case of DC, Nat'l guard from state A cannot operate in state B without permission of governor of state B.

In California, tRump ordered Cal state guard to go to LA. There's now a big lawsuit about tRump violating the Posse Comitatus act in doing so. He also had 700 US Marines in LA; probably another Posse Comitatus issue. The result of that lawsuit will be crucial to reining in tRump's nat'l guard antics.
markinkansas · 61-69, M
@ElwoodBlues emergency order 30 days at a time .. a rinse and repeat order
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@markinkansas Has anyone got the power to intervene during the recess of Congress?
markinkansas · 61-69, M
@FreddieUK that was a so funny google ai search.. yes SOME ONE HAS ALL THE POWER .grin

Yes, the President has the power to make recess appointments during a recess of Congress, allowing them to fill vacancies without Senate confirmation. The President also holds a more theoretical, uninvoked constitutional power to adjourn Congress to a specific time if the two chambers cannot agree on an adjournment date.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@markinkansas That sounds concerning.
@markinkansas An important point that @FreddieUK may not be aware of is that Congress no longer goes on recess, specifically to prevent the President from exercising his recess appointment power. So these de facto recesses are not de jure recesses.

Back to Fred's question: the Gov of New Mexico recently asked his nat'l guard to look into crime somewhere or other. And the theory is that since he already gave the order, tRump can't give the NM guard different orders. I dunno how that would play out.

Its also a crime for a member of the US military to obey an unconstitutional order; by law they must refuse such orders. In practice, i think anybody who refuses tRump would get fired and replaced without delay.
