Photo above – is this your home? Claim it on Zillow. This resident of Hockessin has succeeded in blocking even his/her street address from appearing online. And is now part of a group blocking affordable housing.
I have sooooo been waiting for this article (link below). Hunting for it, off and on, for months. America’s most famous politicians - who were advocates for affordable housing while in office - then block it the instant they return to private life. Case in point – residents of the toney enclaves of Hockessin and Yorklyn in Northern Delaware have bypassed county and other officials, to get affordable housing cancelled near their neighborhoods. And they appealed right to their governor – Matt Meyer – who is NOT a millionaire and DOESN’T live in a palatial mansion behind an iron gate. Let’s see how this goes. Mr. Meyer was just elected in 2024, so he might feel he can blow off these future campaign contributors for now. Or maybe the conversations and contributions predate the election?
I get it . . . if you’re a billionaire heir to the DuPont fortune or the Gore treasure trove (WL Gore company, inventor of Gore-tex) you absolutely value your privacy. Biden does too. I dare you to try and drive down Biden's street. Just try. You can’t even turn onto that road unless you’re an actual resident. There is a 24/7 secret service enclave. You’d have better like driving by Oprah’s or Bezos’ estate. And probably a LOT more people have a beef with them, than with the former president.
Okay, so someone COULD carve out a few hundred acres around Biden’s retirement home, and keep the proletariat at bay until he kicks it. But there’s a LOT of additional area which the residents want off limits. Their latest tactic is to claim their communities are “historic" villages.
I’d be sympathetic to this ploy if anyone was actually trying to tear down a mansion, historic or otherwise. But the land in question is completely undeveloped. Just green space. Rich people love green space. If you have millions or billions, green space around your home may be the most important part of your life. Other than your stock portfolio.
Today's column is of course about the intersection of “wealth privilege” and “political hypocrisy”. The DuPonts, the Gores, the Bidens, the Astors, the Carnegies, the Fords . . . they will assert their ancestors are the ones who made America great. And that as descendants they deserve an exemption from the rules, to protect their buffer zones. The rest of us - people going to their jobs every day as teachers, police, nurses, and even restaurant help - will tell you they just want an affordable place to live. This dispute could go either way . . .
I’m just sayin’ . . .
