California government spending rises at 4-times the inflation rate

Photo above - Hat trick! Artist's fanciful conception of California's 250 mph high speed train rushing out of a huge underground tunnel, while bladeless wind turbines power it from the hillside above. Departure has been delayed indefinitely, however . . .

If you want bigger government and more free stuff, California is the place to be. Most people would have guessed that already, but a taxpayer watchdog group just made it official. From 2019 to 2024, state spending rose 50% - an average of 10% a year. The US national inflation rate was around 2.5% annually over the same period.

This would be a difficult stunt to pull off in ANY era, let alone one where CNN and Fox are having primetime light saber duels over taxes, spending, and deficits. So how did California get away with this chicanery? The legislature and Governor Newsom were found to be “recklessly over-projecting revenue” . . . In other words, lying about how much the state was going to collect in taxes. By hundreds of millions of dollars a year. See link below. The article goes on to state that “they’ve used accounting trickery that would make Enron Musk blush.” Wow, I can’t think of a WORSE indictment. But then again, Musk and Tesla received billions of dollars in federal subsidies and tax credits beginning in the Obama era, so this isn't new territory for anyone.

What’s truly amazing is how little of California's over-spending reached taxpayers. The hills still burn to a cinder each year. The electric grid relies on century old high voltage wires. Rivers are drying up, and reservoirs being drained. There’s an epic crime wave of shoplifting, carjackings, and drug sales. Police try to avoid responding to 911 calls unless it’s “shots fired” or “officer down”. That Star Trek looking high speed rail line will evidently never carry a single passenger.

I doubt this is going to end like DC, where Trump sends in the National Guard. That would simply give Governor Newsom a platform to boost his run for the White House. In a divided America both men are viewed as demi-gods, and their sins are championed as virtues.

If anyone wants to run against Newsom for president in 2028 – democrat or republican – the issues are the same as they ever were: taxes, spending, and crime.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

@SusanInFlorida any way i can help. Also the fed cut funding to all democratic states? Despite most people living in democratic states. CA & NY alone have 39.42 and 19.87 million respectively. Thats 59.29 million or about 40% of the countrys' registered voters are in those two democratic states.
There are 186 million registered voters in the u s. As of 2024.
Yet there were 75.017 million for kamala & 77.302 million for DJT. Therefore 152.319 million of 186 million registered voters voted.
A reported voter turn out of 81.89% Unheard of. Id conclude someone is lying\cooking the books.
And trump not accepting a salary means on the books he never held the position. Therefore when he tries to stay out of prison and runs for president again. He will claim he never served a second term because he didnt collect a salary.
America is in for a rough ride.

@exchrist i'm possibly a fiscal radical. why not cut ALL federal funding to the states? why should we redistribute tax money between them? that's just creating winners and losers.

if you want to build an in-state high speed rail system, wind turbine farm, nuclear reactor, EV battery factory, or AI server array, why should taxpayers in the other 49 states be involved in any way.

Exceptions would be needed for interstate highways and military bases. but we already have 800+ military bases globally - far too many.
exchrist · 36-40
@SusanInFlorida military funding is the biggest waste! I dont think states should be funding federal military contracts. Ww2 politicain unwilling to retire? Probably nestalgia!
If each state could vote to not fund the federal military complex, i think most states would opt out, which would be ideal. We (the U.S.) got (our own) bills to pay and domestic priorities that need funding. To hell with isreals war; The middle east or any other foreign military conflict being propped up by the American taxpayer.
Israel and its cousins (the palestinians) need a conflict resolution and domestic violence intervention counselor (JERRY! JERRY! JERRY!) SPRINGER needs to come out of retirement. Maybe STEVE WILKOS could mediate this one? Thats alot of military bases for a country 30 trilliion+ dollars in debt.

@SusanInFlorida i do think Ukraine needs our support! its defending itself from foreign invaders (Russia). Israel needs to solve its own internal conflict without external funding\resources.

A nice commuter rail would be nice connecting san diego san franciso and la? Nothing fancy just to help reduce traffic maybe 75mph. Why does everything have to be so over the top?
Life isnt supposed to be a movie set.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@exchrist the cost of that has risen from 30 billion to 130 billion. 250 million dollars EACH MILE.

that's why we can't have nice things. there's too much pork and fraud hidden in the contracts.
exchrist · 36-40
@SusanInFlorida agreed. wow! Per mile! Just build a basic one similar to the lirr (Long Island Rail Road). That was cheap; long ago though.

California 🙄

I think California is trying to subvert state and federal funds into a new slush fund to partially replace the USAID loss. The libs spend enormous amounts of taxpayer money ilkegally
TexChik · F
@jackson55 But the libs remain in power and they are going broke nationally
jackson55 · M
@TexChik Yep, California is a one party state.

Hey republicans are criticizing california yet the 200 billion for war funding the fed passed. . . . Thats no problem?

@exchrist best thread hijack attempt of the day. thanks for piggybacking on my top post and boosting the number of replies, groot.

15 years and not a foot of track has been put down.
jackson55 · M
@SusanInFlorida Even if that’s true, I have my doubts. It’s been over 15 years.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@jackson55 the entire project was predicated on the idea that it would only cost 30 billion (not 130) and that the federal government would pay for most of it.

as california keeps reminding everyone - they pay more in taxes than they get back from DC, so high speed trains that cost $250 million a mile should be their reward.
jackson55 · M
@SusanInFlorida I’ve watched that project for years. It’s a joke and will be abandoned eventually. Like other tax payer projects in California like road and bridge repair. They have raised fuel taxes 3 times in the last few years. All for road maintenance. Very little has been spent on road maintenance. Where’s the money going ?

Republicans and Fox are criticizing Newsom. You're kidding!

It's almost like they don't realize that spending huge amounts of money on people who contribute nothing (illegals and junkies) doesn't have consequences... 🤔
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@wildbill83 spending huge amounts of money on impoverished voters, and their recently arrived kin, yields election victories.
