A thought experiment

A home owner is chased out of his home by an armed intruder. If the owner returns to ask for his house back and is shot by the armed intruder can the intruder claim self defence?

Guess i never thought about it that way, but then I'm not being chased out either.
I suppose if you leave you shouldn't go back, things won't be any better than when you left
