A new enemy of affordable housing raises its hand: kayakers and skiers Thread starteras seen on tv Start date2 minutes ago TagsNone

Time was, if you wanted to build affordable housing in America, all you had to worry about was gentrified residents who opposed apartment buildings anywhere within view of their upscale neighborhoods. They're protecting their property values, of course.
Now, this same group of elites is looking further afield. They want to stop the sale of public land everywhere for affordable housing. Even places nowhere near their exclusive gated enclaves. Because that new housing might be visible where they go kayaking, skiing, or birdwatching. You can't make this stuff up. See link below.
There is no end to the entitlements demanded by America’s upper classes. Few of us can afford to jet off for ski vacations in Vail, or take a $28,000 custom built white water kayak to some secluded river. But these NIMBYs demand to have us out of sight all the time, not only at home, but also on their days off.
I share their concern. These elites have been right about so many things. Unlimited illegal immigration gifted them with hordes of cheap nannies, maids, and lawn crews. But now that immigration laws are being enforced, all their low wage domestic help is at risk. Wealthy residents in places like Nantucket and Bel Aire are demonstrating, and hiding their "help". It’s quite possible these elites will turn out to be right about affordable housing too. New homes will eventually be visible to someone, somewhere.
The land in question is just 16 million acres. At ¼ acre per residence, that could be as much as 65 million new homes. Of course they won’t all get built at once. America builds only 2 million new homes a year. That would hardly even make a dent in the working poor and 15 million undocumented migrants who live here already.
But we have to draw the line somewhere. Say yes to more maids and nannies. But no to affordable housing. We should listen to our betters – trust fund birdwatchers, tech company executives with ski condos, and crypto moguls with kayaks. Elites should control both America's housing and immigration policies, right?
I’m just sayin’ . . .
