Why?

Did he pick the 19th of June to make the statement because it is celebrated by Blacks commending the last state to get / give news of the end of slavery. Though slavery didn't end at that point. I wonder if he's including Martin Luther King's birthday?


Memorial Day was a few weeks ago why not that date?

Lots of misconceptions about Juneteenth. Even though it was announced in Texas that slavery ended in the Confederacy, slavery itself did not end until the XIII Amendment to the Constitution was ratified in December of 1865. Even between June and December, slavery was still legal in the border states of Missouri, Kentucky, Delaware, Maryland and in Washington D.C. Even though the announcement was made in Galveston, Texas is such a huge state that it probably took a long time for the message to get across.
