Trump to end Tesla tax subsides. Democrats cheer. But he’s also ending them on Ford and GM electric vehicles. Consternation and confusion result . . .

OK . . . EV tax rebates aren’t the biggest reason we have a $37 trillion national debt. But then again, the government did dole out billions last year. 250,000 new cars, which got a $7,500 rebate on each, and an additional 50,000 used cars at $4,000 each. Bet you didn’t know you get an EV rebate on a used car, eh?

Whats the total to date since Obama dreamed up the first Tesla rebates? I’m not going to all those websites just to add it up, but you can if you want. Hundreds of billions, possible, if you add in subsidies and grants to build Ford/GM battery factories, federal EV charging networks, etc.

Okay, that's all coming to an end now. Musk must be a moron if he hitched his wagon to Trump. He should have known that EV subsidies would be among the first presidential pork to get axed. THIS is what Musk donated $40 million to Trump’s 2024 campaign for? (See link to "Big Beautiful Bill" below.)

Okay, let’s move along.

People who want to impress their neighbors or delude themselves that they’re saving the planet are going to have to pay full price for their 800 volt whips now. Earth is still in the Holocene epoch (see link below). Glaciers have been slowly melting for tens of thousands of years and will continue to do so no matter whether we drive Teslas, Ferarri's, bike, or walk. Just searching for stuff on the internet uses as much carbon as the entire state of California, now that AI involved. So if you really care about our planet you should turn off your laptop or phone right now.

Actually, paying the sticker price for Kia EV5 makes more sense than getting $7,500 back on a $90,000 Ford F150 Lightning EV Platinum truck. Which has a larger carbon footprint that almost any compact ICE vehicle. Bonus factor: US taxpayers didn’t have to build a free battery factory for Kia either, like they did with Ford.

The day of reckoning may be at hand, no matter what part of the political spectrum we identify with. Politicians are going to have a harder time throwing taxpayer dollars at corporations based on how many votes they think it will get them on election day. Presidents and senators will need to remember that any fast-talking billionaire green oligarch can turn out to be a political chameleon who can change colors in an instant and deliver a major burn.

Tax incentives are typically for startups and\or new products innovation. After 2 years neither of those conditions are accurate any longer. A start up is only new for 2 years and other than the original company Tesla all others are competetion for the original brand. Now that the industry is started and more than 3 manufacturers are going why continue the incentive. The engine is started do you burn out the starter too?
