Remember that 55% of the US used to be Mexico. Therefore, more likely than not, they are back where they came from.

As for Mexico, it's been 177 years since the Mexican-American War.

What did the map of that was Mexico in 1848 look like 177 years before that?

The Spanish Empire had earlier claimed many of the lands that were later purchased from France by the United States in 1803 but hadn't actually controlled them. Much of those lands were inhabited by Native American Indian Tribes, who themselves warred among themselves for territory.

Of course, the Spaniards had gotten much of the land around Mexico City, that Mexico later claimed once it won its independence from Spain, from their conquest of the Aztecs, an empire which at its peak never came close to the Rio Grande.

There were probably several hundred thousand people living in California prior to the Spanish conquest. But they were neither Mexicans nor Spaniards.
