Pennsylvania's John Fetterman. The Next Richard Shelby?

There's a saying that Pennsylvania can best be described politically as a state with Philadelphia on one end, Pittsburgh on the other and Alabama in between.

The current Democrat Senator from the state, John Fetterman, has been acting strange ever since his pre-election stroke in 2022.

Things such as praising Donald Trump, talking to Steve Bannon and calling a several-block protest in Los Angeles as "anarchy."

I wouldn't be surprised if he bales on the Democrat primary in 2028 and switches to GOP.

More likely than that is that he flips this year in the hope he can build up support to win the GOP primary in 2028.

He's got his finger in the wind. But Pennsylvania weather can be quirky and quickly change.

The HONORABLE thing for him to do if he intends to switch parties would be to RESIGN (allowing the Democratic Governor, Josh Shapiro, to appoint a Democrat to fill the remaining time of a seat that voters elected a DEMOCRAT to - until a special election is held) and THEN run as a Republican. That's what Rep. (later Sen.) Phil Gramm of Texas did in 1983, just days after being sworn in from an election he won as a Democrat. He felt people elected him as a Democrat and it wouldn't be right to hold his seat after switching parties. He resigned and won the special election as a Republican.

But Fetterman probably knows that if he resigned now, Shapiro might assign someone like former Rep. Connor Lamb (D-PA), who would easily defeat Fetterman in a rematch of their 2022 primary. Moreover, the Republicans might see Fetterman as damaged goods and run someone else in a special election. Dr. Mehmet Oz might even run again.

If Fetterman is going to pull a party-switch, he is more likely to follow to the tune of Richard Shelby, the former Alabama U.S. Senator who switched parties in 1994 and continued to hold his seat in the Senate, despite being elected as a Democrat in 1992.

May 9, 2025 — John Fetterman's popularity is sinking among Democratic voters in his backyard, according to an internal poll obtained by POLITICO — one of ...

The poll is likely to take on new relevance as Democrats in Pennsylvania increasingly talk behind the scenes about the prospect of a primary challenge against Fetterman in 2028.

Fetterman, who lives just outside Pittsburgh, is underwater with likely Democratic voters in the city. Forty-nine percent said they have an unfavorable impression of him, while 46 percent said they have a favorable impression, according to the survey. By way of comparison, the poll showed 82 percent view Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro favorably, versus 13 percent unfavorably.

Pennsylvania governor the next Obama.

He isn’t crazy like Cortez, Omar and Crockett. @Zonuss

@jackjjackson

Shapiro has a whole state constituency to win over for re-election. Not a Congressional district where far right or far left politicians have no problem winning their geeral elections.

Zonus was I think projecting that Shapiro would be a GREAT presidential candidate. He’s certainly superior to Harris or Newsom or your fat Governor. @beckyromero
Zonuss · 46-50, M
@jackjjackson I agree. They are setting him up to be the next big thing. 🙄
Zonuss · 46-50, M
@jackjjackson The Democrats will only have momentum if Trump fails.
jackjjackson · 70-79, M
Agreed. Personally I am seeing Vance elected in 28 and 32 @Zonuss

You don't fool anyone.

If Shapiro got the nomination in 2028, you'd be attacking him as viciously as you have Hillary, Biden and Harris.
jackjjackson · 70-79, M
The reason I gave at the time last year that Shapiro rejected Harris's VP officer is that Shapeiro should have been the presidential candidate would have been smart enough not to pick Hrris or Walz as the VP candidate. @beckyromero

Deflection.

As I said: "If Shapiro got the nomination in 2028, you'd be attacking him as viciously as you have Hillary, Biden and Harris."

On policy likely. He’s not a lying dope like the three you mentioned. @beckyromero

Well, he is YOUR governor. Which of his policies don't you like?
Zonuss · 46-50, M
@beckyromero Joe Biden and his administration failed miserably. The circumstances led us to where we are now.
jackjjackson · 70-79, M
He is doing a great job as governor. As a dem presidential candidate he might be force to espouse policies even he doesn’t like. If he would then hypothetically espouse policies with which I disagree I would comment on it. Of the Dems we know of today he has the best chance against Vance. @beckyromero

Is it because he has a better chance of winning the Blue Wall (MI, WI and PA) than other Dem candidates?

Do you think he (Shapiro) can win Ohio?
jackjjackson · 70-79, M
Dead on re the Biden admin whatever was going on there. @Zonuss
jackjjackson · 70-79, M
Simply because at least as of now Shapiro is sensible unlike the others. The “blue wall” has been relegated to the dustbin of history and Ohio is RED RED RED. You omitted MN the home of the pathetic Humphrey as part of the now dead “blue wall”. The next thing the Dems need to do is eliminate “superdelegates “ and end making their nominating process a farce. @beckyromero

@jackjjackson
The “blue wall” has been relegated to the dustbin of history

Then how do YOU think a Democrat wins if not carrying the "Blue Wall", since the South is out of the question? (Carter was the last Democrat to win without sweeping those three states; he lost Michigan to Ford).
jackjjackson · 70-79, M
I DON’T think a dem wins for a long long time obviously. They have to regroups and patch together a new coalition not dominated by coastal elites. @beckyromero

I don't disagree about the need for Dems to win in "flyover country."

Electoral votes shifted south in 2024 and will again in 2032.

But don't dismiss the possibility of Donald Jr running for the nomination in 2028. Vance will be screwed if he does.
jackjjackson · 70-79, M
Everyone knows DJTJR loses. He won’t be the candidate. @beckyromero

You honestly think Il Duce won't back his son and trash Vance in the process?
