Gavin Newsom's Tax Quip Falls Flat.
California Gavin Newsom Suggests That “Maybe It’s Time” To Cut Off California’s Share Of Federal Taxes Amid Report That Trump Seeks To Cancel State Grants.
I would have suggested this:
"Even with receiving FEMA funds for our earthquakes and wild fires, Californians still paid $83 billion more in federal taxes last year than we received in federal funds.
"That $83 billion was enough to pay for FEMA assistance to Floridians, Texans, Nebraskans and Alaskans. For those receiving FEMA assistance in Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas and the Dakotas. Actually, for all 170 incidents of fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and other disaster incidents - in the entire country. Not just for one year, but from 2015 through May 2024.
"And there still would have been a remaining $19 billion left over to pay for the entire FAA budget in 2024.
"There are over 160,000 Californians who currently serve in the U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Space Force. There's another 50,000 more in the reserves. An estimated 1.8 million veterans live in our state, many of them suffering from lifetime disabilities endured in combat in defense of not just California but the entire nation, from World War II to current operations.
"But threatening to cut off federal funding to California is Donald Trump's way of saying, 'Thank you.'"
