“You don’t have to work a minimum wage job; just get a better job!”

Right?

Ok, but someone still has to work that minimum wage job.

And that person shouldn’t have to live in poverty as a result.

Paying a higher minimum wage unfortunately impacts product and service cost thus raising prices. This in turn leaves people who thought they had more money in the same position as before.

Redistribution of wealth by a percentage based tax regime in concert with social support for low incomes attempts to address this.

Scholarships and other educational support also attempt to lift new generations beyond minimum wage jobs.

It’s not perfect but alternatives also have negative impacts.
