@sstronaut I think Canada should bear in mind the definition of a white elephant!

Because the animals were considered sacred and laws protected them from labor, receiving a .. white elephant .. was simultaneously a blessing and a curse. It was a blessing because the animal was sacred .. and a curse because the recipient now had an animal that was expensive to maintain, could not be given away, and could not be put to much practical use.

@sstronaut The story was that the monarch (of Burma, Thailand, etc.) would give someone a white elephant as an ambiguous gift. Receiving a gift from the monarch is a sign of favour and hence positive, but the law prohibits the animal being put to work or be sold and only the monarch can give one away.
