Please can someone sensible explain to me why the American tariffs are a good idea?

How does this make the already wealthiest economy in the world “great again”? Every export has instantly become more expensive, so less will be sold, and every import has instantly become more expensive for Americans to buy.
No country can exist on its own surely? Do we not all rely on each other to some extent?

tariffs are more nuanced than people make them out to be...

Nor is it the first time we've used them to boost economy; FDR's Reciprocal Tariff Act in 1934 played a major role in getting us out of the great depression.

@TheDeathOCuHullainn Actually, FDR had to LIE to get the United STates into a world war because his socialist New Deal only expanded the Depression. NOTHING he did got us out of the depression he helped cause.
