Does Anyone Really Believe That Speaker Mike Johnson Has No Assets But His House and Is Essentially Living Paycheck to Paycheck?
When Mike Johnson was elected Speaker of the House in 2023, his financial disclosures raised eyebrows. It would appear the Republican Congressman from Louisiana, a right-wing evangelical Christian, did not report a bank account or assets going back to 2016. How could that be?
“I'm a man of modest means,” Johnson told Fox News on Sunday, explaining that he’s spent most of his career working in the nonprofit sector and now has multiple kids to put through college. “But I can relate to everybody else,” he said, adding that he’s a “better leader” as a result.
According to Forbes, Johnson’s main asset—as listed in his financial disclosure forms—is his Benton, Louisiana home, worth an estimated $600,000 (he and his wife, Kelly, borrowed $290,000 to buy the home for $428,500 in 2013).

His Congressional salary was $174,000 until becoming Speaker bumped him up to $223,000 per year.
Starting in 2018, Johnson began teaching college courses online at the Christian Liberty University, raking in up to $30,000 a year, according to Forbes.
He made $10,600 in 2018; $26,200 in 2019 and 2020; and more than $29,000 in 2021 and 2022. Altogether, he's disclosed $122,485 in earnings from the job.
And he says he is now putting multiple kids to put through college.
🤔 I hope he's being honest. Because if Trump and Vance are removed from office, we could be stuck with Johnson as president (unless the Dems capture the House).
