Now Trump is echoing his language, saying that Canada only ever really worked as a state. Looks like he's copying the Putin playbook, perhaps as the precursor to an invasion...?

Well, basically they are. A percentage ( not a real large percentage) Of the people living in Ukraine are ethically Russian. Their families have lived in the area for centuries.
