Allowing the US access to rare earths was a genius move by Zelenskyy

I'm not sure how much of a security guarantee it is. I mean, there will be US interests in play in terms of the harvesting of those minerals but there will be no US troops on the ground to protect them and I see no reason why Russia couldn't just offer to honour those mineral rights when taking new territory. If the US is getting paid, will Trump care who is in control of the territory? Putin could just renegotiate the deal with Russia instead of Ukraine.

Idk - this is a complex situation with Putin as a huge wild card. Too many scenarios could happen.

I am assuming the agreement is that the US provide defensive weapons in exchange for rare Earth profits. In other words, a trade. What happens if the mineral wealth is less than the amount paid for defense? And what happens if Putin simply doesn’t give a shit? How much is the US willing to risk?

Then there is a possibility of a 3 way exchange - where the US also incentivizes Russia in some way. That may bring short term peace.

President Trump has not given that much of a security guarantee. He wants Europe to provide cover while the US reaps the benefits.

Though to be fair the two presidents have not yet met. All the negotiations so fare have been at diplomatic and ministerial levels.
