Your Reaction to M. Streep's Award Speech?

“This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kinda gives permission for other people to do the same thing,” she said. “Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

For? Against? In the middle?

A lot of people dismissing the opinions of Streep because she is a rich and famous actress. Abuse of privilege etc.

By the same logic; reality TV billionaires should also keep their council, surely?

Not dismissing Streep's opinions, simply saying that they are no more important than anyone else's. She has a platform solely because she is a successful actress. Trump, by contrast, has been elected President, for better or worse, so his opinions matter.

@MartinII: Come on. Trump talked about politics long before he ran for office. Remember the Obama birther thing?

@Burnley123: And so far as I remember, nobody took any notice. That's my point. I have no problem at all with Streep saying her piece. I do have a problem with the media suggesting that her views have any authority. And by the way I agree with her views, as quoted in the original post.

@MartinII: Fair point then.
