Inflation update – Guess which city has desk duty police officers earning more than the US president?

Photo above - New York City's new police commissioner is appealing for help in finding out why officers on desk duty are earning $400,000 a year, and hundreds more have been transferred out of 911 response duties.

Okay, I get it. If you wear a badge and a uniform, it's dangerous, thankless work. Sometimes people shoot at you. But you DO get ride around in a police cruiser, sirens blaring, even if it’s only to go to Chik-fil-A. But none of this justifies earning $400,000 a year, IMHO.

NYPD Lieutenant Quantisha Epps earned $406,000 last year (see below). But she DOESN’T carry a gun or drive a cruiser. She’s a desk clerk (administrative officer). If you guessed that overtime is how she racks up more pay than Biden, go to the head of the class. How many hours? 1,600 hours annually. Aye caramba!

But Lieutenant Epps just retired. After her picture appeared on page 1 of a NYC newspaper. The amount of her retirement pension wasn’t given, but presumably it’s close to full salary, without overtime. The silver lining here is that Officer Epps was just a lieutenant. If she’d been a captain, major, colonel, or one of the dozen “assistant chiefs” the taxpayers would have been coughing up a LOT more for her overtime. Maybe they are, and we just haven't been told?

If Lieutenant Epps is the only NYPD officer earning more than President Biden, I’d be surprised. The new police commissioner has promised a full investigation. She’s also promised to end NYPD’s notorious practice of unauthorized officer transfers. At least 500 officers were pulled off their assigned duties via voicemail messages. Apparently indefinitely. See link below. What are these 500 officers doing instead of responding to 911 calls, and rape/murder investigations? It’s not entirely clear. The commissioner wants to investigate this too.

All of this is a good idea. Commissioner Jessica Tisch seems to be the breath of fresh air the city needs. But the deeper question is why NYC’s Mayor Adams (a former police officer) and all the current Chiefs, assistant chiefs, colonels, majors and captains originally set up - and perpetuated - a system where desk clerks could earn more than the US president. No wonder NYC is constantly teetering on financial ruin.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

I think what is severely in need of investigating is the amount of overtime if it was necessary for her to put in almost 67 days worth in a year and it was legitimately needed, then there is an issue of lack of staff to handle the workload.
The equivalent of over two months just cannot be healthy if break that down to a daily level presuming that they work 48 weeks in a year and work 5 day week each you are looking at about 15 hour days for everyday she worked in that year.
If she was doing it because it was actually needed then there is definitely not enough people to do the work needed

@Avectoijesuismoi the evolving story. The $250,000 in overtime pay is (allegedly) a bribe authorized by her direct superior in exchange for carnal relations.

In other words, she was prostituting herself at $20,000 a month until she got caught. Then pivoted to "sexual harassment"

@SusanInFlorida Obviously not very good at that either then at only $ 20 0000 for a whole month

But there is usually a story and when they get found out the holler SEXUAL HARASSMENT etc

@Patriot96 i disagree. Both police unions and teachers unions exist to keep incompetent and abusive members on the job. The unions could care less about overtime, since they aren't collecting higher dues from overtime abusers.

a teachers union representative explained to me once "I spend 90% of my time trying to keep the worst performing teachers from getting fired. Everything else is only 10%::
