Give me one good reason why the President of the Longshoremen’s union SHOULDN’T have a mansion, a 76 foot yacht, AND a Bentley?

Photo above – drone’s eye view of Daggett’s mansion, 5 car garage, and Bentley. Not shown . . . the 76 foot yacht he owns.

Harold Daggett. He has been president of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) for more than a decade. And before that spent 40 years in other union boss roles. The ILA union which recently turned down a 50% wage hike, and is demanding an end to any further dock automation. President Daggett has threatened that if the ILA doesn't get its demands, "this port will never open up again." See Newsweek link at bottom.

Not a very sympathetic character, is he? Surprisingly, the White House has his back. See Reuters link at bottom. The president (allegedly) used his personal “X” account to urge the shipping companies to agree to Daggett’s demands. Whoopee! It’s an election year . . .

But why would Biden even want to tweet support of a millionaire yacht owner who threatens to close America’s ports permanently? What’s the endgame here? At least he didn’t take Air Force one to join the ILA picket line, like he did with the autoworkers.

Anyway, Biden isn’t running for president. Candidate Kamala is. And Trump. I’d be interested in reading THEIR tweets about why a 50% wage hike for longshoremen isn’t enough, and why America should promise NEVER to automate container ship cargo handling again. It IS an election year . . .

In return, can we get Mr. Daggett to agree to replace his Bentley with something American made, like a Cadillac? That’s what the old-school union bosses probably would have driven.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

It doesn't matter who or what the consumer always pays....
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@masterofyou unless its subsidized by the government. like Tesla's, for people who want to go zero to 60 in 4 seconds, with government assistance.

Compared the the recent President of the NRA and a certain ex President who shall remain namelss I would say he is doing OK the American way. Thats "Free Enterprise" spelled C.O.R.R.U.P.T.I.O.N.😷
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@SusanInFlorida I will admit to focussing on th corupution angle and considering the fuss of the recently departed NRA Presidents mansion I figured it was fair game. (Lets not mention the other one and property.) So to go straight to your question, since there are more firarms in America than Americans I am sure guns are well represented among dockworkers. And I have never advocated for firearm bans in America. I think its way too late for that..😷
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@whowasthatmaskedman 46% of americans don't currently own, and have never owned, a firearm. most of the guns that ARE owned are shotguns for waterfowl, deer rifles, and target pistols
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@SusanInFlorida Well thank goodness none of those weapons are ever used for anything else but the intended purpose. You do realise that your claim of 46% owning guns actually makes the other 54% almost twice as insane.. And on a side note, in my opinion hunting will not be "sport" until they arm the ducks and the deer.

I'm not condoning any of his actions but shouldn't you look @ congress before private citizens ???????
Congress is using OUR money and nobody seems to care how corrupt they are
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@pdockal i look at government officials every day in this column.

@SusanInFlorida

I din't think he was a government official but a private citizen
Sometimes striking is the only way to get a fair deal
Cooperations have too much power and take advantage
masterofyou · 70-79, M
Yeah but they get away with it anyway they?? And in the end the poor pay the price ....
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@masterofyou tariffs, trade duties, sales tax, and business levies in general are "regressive". meaning they fall disproportionately on the poor, because they are added in to the cost of goods sold.
