Are u worried about the ports workers going on strike in the US 🇺🇸

🙄 As if we really needed this mess right now.
We could see shelves of food in grocery stores come up...empty. They deserve better. But is this the right way. The Great Port Strike of 2024. Comments. 🤔 🍞 🍅 🥚 🍖

No. I'm not worried.

It's a wage/benefit dispute that will get settled by regular contract negotions, or court-ordered arbitration.

Impact to food supply & other basic consumer goods will be minimal - because over 80% of US grocery items are domestically produced & moved by trucks or rail.

Imported items like electronics are different story, but nobody will starve because Best Buy can't deliver their big screen in 3 days.

And everyone piling on this post to spread their usual conspiracy paranoia & anti-labor rants will do what they always do.

Life will go on.

@GuiltyBiStander me : I love my planet .
Also me : I don’t care how impactful it is , I need that TV from China here in 2 days .

@GuiltyBiStander I truly hope so. ☺

Present-day unions don't make sense.

They average $140k/year salary.
They already refused a 50% (= $70k) wage increase.
They are concerned about future automation, but are forcing the cost of automation to have a much better ROI. Might just secure themselves obsolescence.

This is just a false flag to continue more food supply distuption...just like the fires at meat packing plants, dead cows, and bird flu outbreaks in egg plants. Keep ppl scared and compliant.

@JSul3 Some states have a good economy right now. 🌎
JSul3 · 70-79
@Zonuss And some states may not.
IMO, if you want a good job, then get the education/training for the jobs that are in demand....and prepare to relocate, if necessary to where the job is.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@JSul3 babies sit wallowing in their dirty diaper waiting for someone to change it .
Men make their own change .
This is the only way it has ever really worked. Workers were told to make sacrifices during the pandemic and now they are getting the shaft.

Let's stop pretending the oligarchs will just pay people fairly out of the goodness of their hearts.
Remember this will hurt more again because of decisions made in boardrooms by oligarchs.

JIT or Just In Time is why even your grocery store doesn't have more than a few days worth of food. Anything more than what will sell immediately is not profitable and "wasted space". All because someone in a C suite office has reduced the entire food and supply chain to a cost/benefit equation.
Zonuss · 46-50, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow They have food stored up in warehouses for now. If the strike goes on for more than 2 weeks we are done. 🤔
justanothername · 51-55, M
It shouldn’t impact locally produced food. It’s more likely to impact any imported goods or electronics that come in from Europe. It will definitely impact European car imports.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@justanothername Most US manufacturing has a few choke points reliant on imports.,. And the docks can virtually shut down manufacturing above cottage industies and primary production..😷
GuiltyBiStander · 31-35, F
@whowasthatmaskedman @justanothername

Maybe, but not so much.

We should all dial down the the panic, and remember that (so far) this is not a total shutdown. Right now West Coast ports remain open, and they account for over 45% of all inbound import loads - including manufacturing parts and consumer goods from Asian markets.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@GuiltyBiStander I am not panicked at all. Its not like the nation will starve. But the economy will take a hit
😷
JSul3 · 70-79
They have not had a raise in almost a decade.
Time to pay up.
Zonuss · 46-50, M
@JSul3 I would agree.
Good. The more strikes the better. ✊🏻 🇺🇲

Now we'll get to see the real side of people.
The lockdown was an eye opener... But I don't imagine many learned from that experience
Zonuss · 46-50, M
@Mellowgirl You think that this will be worse 🤔
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@Zonuss yep... If not the same.
Depending on how long this lasts it could be incredibly disruptive...
Especially in the run up to thanksgiving/Xmas
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M

@Zonuss Going way deeper than politics of the left or right, the global economic future of America is already brain dead and on life support. So "business as usual" is only going to mean more of the same with the medical bills mounting.. No matter what happens next, its the average American who is going to foot the bill. And business grinding to a halt is one of the first things that will have to happen to start the painful process.. Having the luxury of being someplace else, I can afford to sit back and watch..😷

That and Middle East tensions have plummeted the stock market today..
