The bad moral value of force

Milton Friedman said: “The bad moral value of force triumphs over good intentions.”

Is it morally right for the state to take from people that which they do not wish to give? Would the political left admit they try to fight evil with evil?

Nobody in their right mind would think Milton Friedman is left wing.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Friedman described himself as a “consistent liberal.” Most call him a libertarian. What do any of these labels mean? All I know is that it is the left wanting more state intervention, and to make us all less human and less free. Can you tell me why?

Does socialism make us free? What's more important: equality or liberty?
@emiliya Yes. And Libertarians in the American sense are right wing.

It basically is an ideology that believes letting capitalists run everything like a corporation will magically solve the world's problems.

You want to know what it actually creates. Think Russia under Boris Yeltsin. That was the doing of people like Friedman.

None of this has anything to do with socialism. I am surprised a Russian would not understand that. Maybe understanding political ideologies are no longer taught?

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Why do you think it has nothing to do with socialism? Do you think all Russians are communist? My family aren't. They are Jews who now own businesses. Milton Friedman was Jewish. His parents came from Hungary, from a city now belonging to Ukraine. Like my family, they were poor, working class Jews. It was only when perestroika was introduced that my grandfather was able to start a business and accumulate wealth. My parents were deep, intelligent people and weren't particularly money hungry, but we still had money.

When did capitalists say that money magically solves the world's problems? And why is it anyone's job to solve the world's problems? Most people can't solve their own problems. How do they solve the world's?

The Soviet Union had a rapid collapse, and it was executed poorly. Does this mean that communism is good? The way I see it, everyone is getting screwed, whether it by capitalists or communists. They are two sides of the same coin. In capitalism, you can create your own world if you have the money to. Sometimes poor people can get the money, like my grandfather did. If you are living under communism, you will never be able to create your own world. We all have the right to pursue our unlimited potential and the right to own a home, to send our children to a private school if we want, to invest in what we want. Equality is not a good or admirable goal. Liberty is.

@emiliya At the time Friedman called himself a liberal, the term meant FREE MARKET LAISSEZ FAIRE CAPITALISM.
Liberalism took the Nazi turn in the early Sixties due to the Port Huron Statement.
@Reason10 It has been applied in different ways for centuries. The Canadian Liberal party was based on what is now called Libertarian ideas in the 1800s.

One thing that has never had anything to do with the term is nazism.
