I kind of feel like the US is being antagonistic to China for no reason other than it is becoming a developed country

I don't see why the US and China can't both benefit from strong diplomatic and economic ties. They have much to offer. In fact, I could imagine Russia and the Middle East never again being a problem if this were the case.

I somewhat suspect that part of the completely counterproductive rhetoric is motivated by the military industrial complex.
