How does a family turn its back on a member in public the way the Kennedys are shitting on RFK Jr?

Did they need to release a public statement condemning him for his political belief and endorsement of Trump? What did they accomplish other than trying to hurt him? No one in my family agrees with my politically but they don't alienate or humiliate me like that.
