Gun control to many is saying you want to take their guns away, and it isn't just simple-minded people who object to taking their guns away.
There is something to be said about stricter laws, better background checks, red flag laws, etc., but even if we have all that, it isn't the whole answer to gun violence.
Unless and until we deal with the people component and better control of ownership issues at the same time, we'll continue barking up the wrong tree.
