He's worked hard to purge Labour of anything that even remotely smells of the left. This isn't Labour. It's something else.

@Richard65 Well they'd not have 412 MPs if he hadn't so...
Richard65 · M
@Luciebelle so, effectively there's no left wing opposition to balance the scales against the centre right of Starmer's Labour or far right populists like Johnson and Farage. It proves this country is predominantly small 'c' conservative, yet they cling to the idea of a state funded NHS. I don't know if you think that's a good thing, but it really isn't. The Overton Window remains. With Starmer, it's just as The Who sang, meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

@Richard65 The UK is indeed small-c conservative. I've got BBC1 on and about 20 minutes ago Alastair Campbell pointed out that precise thing, that it's very hard to win from the centre-left in the UK because even without always loving the Tories, most British people are very-small-c conservative.

Does that actually matter? If you want to win an election you go to where the votes are.

@Luciebelle it's not a dancing competition, it's a difference of ideologies. To dump your party's ideology in order to simply win elections is the worst kind of politics. You might argue that Starmer is being true to his own ideology (and that of his supporters), which means the centre right has taken over Labour. Which leads me to my original point. Is it healthy for a democracy to decimate the left, so there's no political/ideological balance against centre right and far right? No, it's not good for this country at all. Not only is there now no left wing opposition to the Tories or Reform, there's none to influence the Labour Party either.
Luciebelle · F
@Richard65 I think most people don't care about ideology so much as practicality. So take left wing ideas and temper them a bit, and you get something more centrist (and appealing to more people). The tories ought to be doing the same from the other side but for the moment are probably going off wandering in the right and out of power for a while.

Anyway Starmer by all accounts is rather more left wing than things suggest, but he looks at things practically rather than what feels good or, if he could wave a wand, he might want as ideal. Even if I'm not super sure about Labour as a whole, he is absolutely the sort of person I want as prime minister.

Anyway (again), it's done now. We can all hope for the best :D And maybe have a quick nap

@Luciebelle Starmer literally cannot open his mouth without lying. He's a shyster, just like Johnson, just like Farage.
Best wishes.

@Richard65 let’s give the guy a chance
