Claudia Sheinbaum elected as first female (and Jewish) President of Mexico

This is a big deal. A different path for Mexico. She was the mayor of Mexico City and won this election in a landslide. She had a good line. “I’m someone who makes decisions based on the data.” That's a real departure. Good luck to her.

(CNN) Known as “la Doctora” for her glittering academic credentials, Claudia Sheinbaum is a physicist with a doctorate in energy engineering, the former mayor of one of the world’s most populous cities, and was part of the United Nations panel of climate scientists that received a Nobel Peace Prize.

And on Sunday, she became the first woman, and the first Jewish person, to be elected president of Mexico.

Sheinbaum won around 60% of the vote in the largest election in Mexico’s history, marking a historic achievement in a mostly Catholic country known for its deeply patriarchal culture.

The 61-year-old is set to replace the outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, her longtime ally whose social welfare programs lifted many Mexicans out of poverty, making their leftist Morena party favorite in the polls.

I wish her all the best. Wow! A Jewish woman with a PhD in physics as a president of Mexico! 😳

@helenS It sounds almost unreal, huh? And she won big.

@Ynotisay I had similar feelings when Barack Obama became President of the United states.

@helenS Yeah. Good point. He was so obviously a smart, compassionate leader but I wasn't 100 percent sure how the country would take "Blacky McBlackman" with the middle name "Hussein" either. I was really proud of the nation that day. And it paid off for the country. I imagine there's a lot of proud Mexicans today as well. Character really does count. It's just not always the driving factor for some.

A little glimmer of hope - I hope there's more to come.

I was happy to hear the news. Such a positive step forward! Only wish something like that could happen in the US.
