Palestine protests - what to do

I am hearing from one side that National Guard should be called. Given what happened at Kent State in 1970, I think this would make the issue worse. MUCH, MUCH WORSE. Generally, trying to forcefully remove people may seem like you are protecting people, but instead you are making things worse.

On the other hand, these protests have gotten serious and violent. How does one restore safety to campuses without infringing upon rights? We do have rights in the USA. If your campus is closed to students only, you can arrest non students. But if your campus is open (like most universities) - that's tough. I was once escorted off of a college campus for being a non-student. In my case, I walked onto a campus at night, by myself, not knowing I was on a campus. The campus police put me in the back of a police car and drove me off, saying they cannot charge me with anything, but they can warn me that I was trespassing and if I came back on campus without official business they could charge me with trespassing because I have already been warned. Not sure if that was legal, but I didn't test it.

So, what do people like Mike Johnson expect to be done? Clearly there is unchecked antisemitism amongst many of these protesters. And clearly there are non-student agitators joining the crowd. But what many people don't know, is that there are many Jewish people amongst the protesters, also protesting funding Israel's war machine, and the treatment of Palestinians. And they are facing harassment - from fellow jews and other Israel supporters.

I just feel like it is hard to find the truth here. I should point out that I have a Jewish family member who is faculty at Columbia, and she isn't fearful for her life. She seems to be more concerned with having to teach online classes for the rest of the semester.

As far as trespassing is concerned, my understanding is, if it’s private property (meaning NOT public, like sidewalks), the owner can “trespass” you for any reason, or no reason. They (or the police) tell you you have been “trespassed” and if you return to the property during the span of ‘the trespass” you are subject to arrest.

@Justice4All What do we do about the initial fatalities and hostages. Free pass?

@Justice4All Wasn’t what ‘transpired’ on October 7 exactly that? Killing innocent civilians, women and children, kidnapping, extortion, etc? I have never known, read, or heard of any law that demands that self-defense against warlike attack takes ONLY the same number of victims as the initial attack. Frankly, it’s just silly.

@Mamapolo2016 the question is where is the line between defense and retaliation.
@trollslayer well, if I ran the world it might not happen at all. But I don’t. In my opinion, by the act of violence committed, you don’t get to complain when the play gets rough. If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out.

@Mamapolo2016 the problem in this conflict is a continued escalation of what “rough” means, with near continual violence for 80 years. If that is okay, then that justifies Oct 7th, and I am not okay with that.
@trollslayer I respect your right to your opinion.

@Mamapolo2016 I have a solution. Peace is in the hands of Hamas who doesn't want peace. All Hamas needs to do to end the suffering is to unconditionally surrender and return the hostages alive. They won't because they want to kill Palestinians for the sake of money and power in the form of international outrage.

So my solution is, Iran and Qatar take in all the citizens of Gaza. All of them. Democrat supporters should cover all moving expenses. Israel gets Gaza for compensation of the babies, children, men, and women killed on October 7. Israel gave up Gaza to be good neighbors. They left millions of dollars of agricultural equipment so Gazans could grow their own food. The Gazans destroyed the gifts along with their financial independence. Israel built them a water system and the Gazans dug up the pipes to make rockets to fire into Israel. So, lets all help kick a bad neighbor out of a good neighborhood.
