America does not have a State religion but it does have freedom of religion and it is supposed to honor equal human and civil rights for everyone in the country. Therefore, Christianity is no more important than worshiping a grain of sand. But it is important to observe everyone's human and civil rights.

Things went to hell when the SCOTUS dummies allowed religious fantics to hold public office.
