Trump Throws NATO Under The Putin Bus

Trump says he'd 'encourage' Russia to attack NATO allies who don't pay their bills

The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Republican front-runner Donald Trump said Saturday that, as president, he warned NATO allies that he "would encourage" Russia "to do whatever the hell they want" to countries that are "delinquent" as he ramped up his attacks on foreign aid and longstanding international alliances.

Speaking at a rally in Conway, South Carolina, Trump recounted a story he has told before about an unidentified NATO member who confronted him over his threat not to defend members who fail to meet the trans-Atlantic alliance's defense spending targets.

But this time, Trump went further, saying had told the member that he would, in fact, "encourage" Russia to do as it wishes in that case.

'You didn't pay? You're delinquent?'" Trump recounted saying. "'No I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. You gotta pay. You gotta pay your bills.'"

NATO allies agreed in 2014, after Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, to halt the spending cuts they had made after the Cold War and move toward spending 2% of their GDPs on defense by 2024.

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates responded, saying that: "Encouraging invasions of our closest allies by murderous regimes is appalling and unhinged – and it endangers American national security, global stability, and our economy at home."

Trump's comments come as Ukraine remains mired in its efforts to stave off Russia's 2022 invasion and as Republicans in Congress have become increasingly skeptical of providing additional aid money to the country as it struggles with stalled counteroffensives and weapons shortfalls.

They also come as Trump and his team are increasingly confident he will lock up the nomination in the coming weeks following commanding victories in the first votes of the 2024 Republican nominating calendar.

During his 2016 campaign, Trump alarmed Western allies by warning that the United States, under his leadership, might abandon its NATO treaty commitments and only come to the defense of countries that meet the alliance's guidelines by committing 2 percent of their gross domestic products to military spending.

Trump, as president, eventually endorsed NATO's Article 5 mutual defense clause, which states that an armed attack against one or more of its members shall be considered an attack against all members. But he often depicted NATO allies as leeches on the U.S. military and openly questioned the value of the military alliance that has defined American foreign policy for decades.

As of 2022, NATO reported that seven of what are now 31 NATO member countries were meeting that obligation — up from three in 2014. Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine has spurred additional military spending by some NATO members.

Trump has often tried to take credit for that increase, and bragged again Saturday that, as a results of his threats, "hundreds of billions of dollars came into NATO"— even though countries do not pay NATO directly.

Note: Article above edited...you can easily read the entire piece at the AP, Guardian, NPR, and many other sources.

Never forget: Trump stood before us and the world in Helsinki, and sided with war criminal Putin, over our allies and intel agencies. He touted Putin as a genius for invading Ukraine.

Once again the IDIOTS at this forum don't get it.
LEGALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT TRUMP spoke about this during his legitimate presidency (as opposed to what we have now.) He said it's time for nations on the other side of the world to PAY FOR THEIR DEFENSE. It's time for the United States to quit being the policeman of the world.
Those of you liberals here who protested EVERY war this country has engaged in since the Sixties (Vietnam, Cold War, Iraq War, etc) should be APPLAUDING this move. THIS president is giving you your wish. He is getting the United States OUT of the war business. Rich countries like South Korea, Saudi Arabia, etc are going to have to start paying their bills or our troops will be taken out of their country and brought home

HOLY SHIT, you Woodstock liberals should be cheering to the top of your lungs.

"one two three what are we fighting for...don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Vietnam."

YOU'RE GETTING YOUR WISH.

Think of Putin and Russia as the belt that dad is pulling out of his belt loops if the deadbeat NATO countries don't pay their bills.

This is so funny because Putin is such a paper tiger. He's barely able to keep a pissant country like Ukraine in line. Stalin, Khrushchev or Brezhnev would be kicking sand in that pussy's face.

This is why most people have such contempt for liberal Democrats. They are truly the DUMBEST people in America.

@Reason10 The Democrats are not the ones trying to suppress free access to the ballot box....that would be the party formerly known as the GOP, but are now 100% the Party of Trump, where no voice of dissent is allowed, and those who do not bow down and pledge total loyalty to the Orange Messiah, will be quickly dispatched.
@JSul3 But what about LEGALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT TRUMP?!!!! 😝
JSul3 · 70-79
@BohemianBoo Trump was elected in 2016. He lost the 2020 election to Biden.
Biden is the current president.
@JSul3 You're telling me this man was lying?

@Reason10
keep a pissant country like Ukraine in line
putin isn't trying to keep anyone 'in line'. He has invaded the sovereign democracy of Ukraine, and has set about stealing and killing everyone and everything Ukrainian. Ukraine just happens to be at the top of putin's long list.

He is trying to destroy the Western democracies.

In this he is being aided and abetted by King Donald, the republican party and its supporters, the propagandist carlson, and all others who seek to destroy democracy and the Constitution... all for their own gain.
@Reason10 Well said. NATO has been taking advantage of the US taxpayer for years, and Trump called them out to pay their fair share. Liberals conveniently forget that no new wars started during the Trump administration, and the Abraham Accords was doing a lot to bring peace to the middle east. With Biden, we had a clusterf**k withdrawal in Afghanistan, and two new wars.

@BizSuitStacy The AAs were never ratified and Saudis have stated that until the war in Gaza is resolved, all bets are off.
As Jerusalem’s Palestinians fight for their continued presence in the city and Gaza resists the criminal Israeli onslaught, "normalisation with Israel" has proven to be an utter failure in bringing peace and security to the region. To be sure, given what has transpired since the signing of the Abraham Accords last September, normalisation has shown itself to be a mere business transaction for those who engaged in it.
@JSul3
The AAs were never ratified
🤣🤣🤣 👆 that's best you've got? Forget about the 4 Nobel nominations Trump received, or the fact that Trump didn't get his 2nd term to continue working toward peace in the middle east.
You libs come up with the most pathetic excuses. I'll bet you were one of those "Bush lied, and people died" types. You want peace...just as long as Trump doesn't come up with the solution. Nope...keep marching to the beat of the globalist elites and the military industrial complex.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@BizSuitStacy You are talking about "pathetic excuses", but you have to bring up the nobel price. A price where anyone can nominate anyone. Who nominated Donald Trump?

Christian Tybring-Gjedde: A Right-Wing Norwegian Populist, in 2020 and 2018
Claudia Tenney: A republican lawmaker
Laura Huhtasaari: A member of the Right-Wing Finish party.

... This little circle jerk, of populists tapping each other on the shoulders is part of your argument. Maybe it's time to look in the mirror when using the word "pathetic".

@BizSuitStacy Actually it was Colin Powell who sat down and lied about weapons of mass destruction....but GWB's pal Dick Cheney deserves some credit too, since he said we would be greeted as liberators and that oil in Iraq would pay for the war.

Sadly, none of these fools ever read a history book on the middle east....and Trump has no clue either, but be sure to send him some of your $, as he needs it for legal fees.
Remember when Trump said he didn't need anyone's money, because he was so rich?
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@JSul3 Trump, despite being twarted by the uniparty, got multiple peace deals signed in the Middle East. He obviously knows more about this place you say he knows nothing about than the John Kerrys of the world.

By the way, where is John?
JSul3 · 70-79
@IronHamster If you are speaking of the Abram Accords, they were never ratified ....and were economically driven. They mean nothing now as the Saudis say nothing will be resolved until Israel stops bombing Gaza....and notice others are getting into tbe act like the Houthi rebels. Some peace, right?
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@JSul3 Economic agreements are peace agreements.
JSul3 · 70-79
@IronHamster So how long did it last?

Part of the agreement was that Israel would end expansion in the West Bank, so rhe Abraham Accords plummeted in the years ahead as Israeli interventions in the West Bank reached their deadliest level in a generation.
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@JSul3 The point is, the John Kerrys won't even move toward these deals and shut down all support of WORKING plans because they were from the opposing side.

The John Kerrys solution is a two state plan, which the Antifada crowd has been rejecting since before 1947. They're clearly insane, as insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results.

@IronHamster Do you believe that Palestine should have their own land, just like Israel?
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@JSul3 When supporters of Palestine speak, they "forget" important details, now, don't they?
JSul3 · 70-79
@IronHamster Keep killing innocent civilians. That will win friends and influence people.
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@JSul3 Oh?
