Hey, I'm Canadian and from the comments below, I think I know your history better than you folks!
Did you know that 'way back then' the Democrats were just like the current radical right Republicans are today? Yes, they were slaveowning, white-only, no representaton unless you were a tax-payer, bigotted group of thugs. (Sorry if I hurt some feelings here, but check it out).
So, yes, they would have kept Lincoln off the ballot because he was anti-slavery. Now, what do you really think of Lincoln? He was an equitable man, an honourable man - and actually is the one US President that I truly admire. If Donald Trump were on the ballot, he'd have run as a Democrat back then.
So: Now look at the Democratic Part of America and look at what they are trying to do: Establish equitablity for all Americans - yes, they are: They are trying to create a medical support system (like Canada's) so that poor people can afford and get medical help before they die! They are trying to get rid of slum-landlords. They know that they need money to do these things AND the reason they can't get money is because of the mighty "American Dream" that everyone must get rich at the expense of everyone else (There is NO love in the USA today). Your rich people (Yes, there are 1%'ers) are getting richer and they are looking at you and smiling because you are giving them the power to keep you at the social level where you are and the only thing you have that is good is that you aren't as impoverished like the millions of people who aren't at your social level who are! IF you were smart (are you?) you'd get your Congressmen to raise taxes on your rich people and direct it to your poor people (OH>>> that's Socialism??? .... no it's HUMAN KINDNESS.).
Actually. some of you folks who commented below can help me here: I need to know why it the American people seem to believe that abortions are the bane of humanity? Think hard on this because you DO know that if your daughter were raped and got pregnant from it that you'd want her to have an abortion. But, no, that would never happen - RIGHT? But (mostly) black women who have no means of support except to prostitute themselves (a form of slavery - isn't it?), or are raped by their pimps, brothers or fathers or white men get pregnant and they have no way to resolve the issue - no doctor, no money (because they have none and nobody to give them any) and now no clinic, no 'day-after' pill, no person to turn to....who's really causing the problem here?
So: If you are going to jump on me for this post... don't just give me shit.... give me a reasonable answer about why you are against what the Democrats are trying to do and what the Republicans are really trying to do to Make America Great Again! 😜

@JollyRoger That was a well stated post but I think you have listened to a lot of mainstream US media. The Democrats are not about equality. They have the desire to give things to the masses at the expense of people who work hard and have resources. That gets them votes so they can remain in power. That's the whole game plan - they are not trying to improve anything.
You mentioned the 1%ers and yes, those are among the people that are expected to pony up cash to fund the Democrat plans. The Democrat 1%ers though will be left alone and not tapped on to help. I wish it was as benevolent as you say but it's not. I was a card carrying Democrat for decades but as they went further and further into communism I had to leave. Lots of us have but we can't side with the Republicans wholly either.

@joe438 But, Joe... You are looking at the 'small picture'.... You are looking in your own wallet to count your money when other people are looking into garbage cans to find food.
Now on the topic of 'gettng votes'.... what is "The Donald" doing that the Democrats aren't doing? Isn't he playing to your self-centred, self-righeous (I worked for this wealth) greed so you can afford a vacation on some warm island, a large car that burns more fuel than most people have as food and health budgets?
I'm not trying to say that all poor people are worthy of sharing your wealth.... there are many who are lazy, drug dealing wife slaving pimps, robbers and so forth.... But there is a LARGE segment of people in the USA who do not have a a job with benefits to give them a home, medical insurance, even a CAR to get to work.... and they work more hours than you at much less pay and they don't have the luxury of birth control to be able to decide how large their family should be. They are in an EXISTENCE, not a LIFESTYLE. Be thankful for what you have, enjoy what you have and what you can give to your family.
You know how important it is to give your children a good path to follow (yes they learn it from you)... well, the same goes for poor people: if their fathers and mothers are following a life of drug dealing and prostitution just so they can TRY to get out of a ghetto - and (let's say they succeed), then that's the pattern that their children are going to model for their own children. I have wealth (enough for me and my wife) - it's hardly a million dollars = house included. But I can see where others have much less and I see the effect it has on them and I do give (SOME) of my excess to them through my (Canadian) tax system = we pay taxes to support our medical system, we pay taxes on our taxes to give needy people money (our Goods and Services tax is taken from us 'rich' people and distributed to poor ones). We build homes for our homeless - just to get them off the street so to try to keep them out of trouble.
Am I boring you? Yes, we Canadians have LEARNED to share..... yet, we don't have a dictatorial government, we don't live in communes, we don't have state dictated jobs, we go where we want, we associate with whoever we want and we do the same things you do with our free time.
SO: What is Socialism except a word that the American people have developed an unreasonable fear of because your government (supported by rich people)( wants to keep you thinking that you have to "earn your keep' or you will all be communists! That's not a reality... but it works!
Take a good look at your leading Republican politician and see what he has done to help America? List for me, please what he has REALLY achieved! Oh... yes, he dismantled the so called "Obamacare' that was not helping rich people. He cut taxes on businesses so rich people could affort do pay a pittance more to folks like you while pocketing a disproportionate amount of that wealth in their own pockets and off-shore bank accounts where it will never benefit 'ordinary' Americans like you.
Am I against the American way of life? No... I like American people. But I see them as not knowing how their world works outside of their own neighbourhood: They leave all of that knowledge to their elected leaders WHO, just like Joe Biden and the Democrats, and just like Ron DeSantis and the Republicans (I'm not going to name everyone) are trhing to build themselves an empire on your backs.
I'm Canadian.... it's in my culture that I apologize when I hurt peoples' feelings - So, please accept my apology. I'm sorry.

@joe438 Joe, I read some of you later comments. Yes, I understand that you are in the 'middle' of where the two major political parties want to lead America. But, it is truly folk like you who, if you take the initiative to inform yourselves, you can make the difference.... not just to get the Democrats re-elected, but to get the Republicans to STOP blocking every government initiative that costs money (other than war budgets).
We here in Canada have the same problems - we have 2 major parties and several smaller ones. The larger ones call each other names and block each other's initiatives too.... but the smaller parties are the 'saner'(?) ones who can temper that rhetoric and actually sway either of the more powerful parties to listen to reason. With your ENFORCED 2 party (only) system, you folks don't have that buffer of compromising reason. The result is much wasted tax money on 'pushed through' legislateion that in retrospect was just a partisan ploy to get votes and which didn't achieve its goals. Or, tie ups in the chambers of government with bickering that just stalls the whole agenda for good governance and gets folks like you angry and feeling disempowered.
I'm a part of a group of citizens who go to talk with our elected people on a regular basis.... we have our priorities set ane we use our leverage (I suppose it's like the American Rifle Association in a way - except that we work for social justice) ask our politicians to work together and to resolve social issues. We ask them their opinions and we listen. Sometimes they have good reasons for wanting to vote a certain way that is against our desires.... but we're not 'dictators' either and we have to abide for the best decisions to be accepted.
My advice.... rather than feeling uninformed and ineffective: Look for a lobbying group that you know has good social values, i.e., looking for the good IN people; and join or just support them. That's really what is meant by "grass-roots' politics.
To go on: When I was still working (I'm now retired), I used to write briefing notes for my bosses (it was a government job) so they could go to meetings and impress the elected people of what was needed in a certain program or on a certain issue. I was amazed at myself at how many of my own ideas actually were voiced and put forth for action!
My point: Little people (like me) can have a great impact if we work with others who have a vision: Those people we elect sometimes don't have a solid idea of which way to vote and, sometimes, our voices give them a flash of inspiration that can work wonders in causing change. You and I know that the RICH people do that and they do it by padding someone's pocket with money.... BUT: common-sense is also 'capital' and using it wisely is what MOST honest politicians (the guy or woman you voted for) wants to hear and carry forward.
Don't give up on your country - YOUR COUNTRY REALLY DOES NEED YOU!

@JollyRoger You seem sensible but you're still seeing our political parties through rose colored glasses. There is a band of moderates in both of the major parties who truly want the best for the country. It's an increasingly narrow band in the Democrats, and the state I live in (MA) is simply overrun with dumb political correctness. Voting here is actually kind of useless. I considered making the time to tr and change what I can at a local level but for now I have to pay bills and can't consider an office.
JollyRoger · 70-79, M
@joe438 Joe, You're a professor of the Eng;lish language. You have associates who are political scientists and psychologists..... together you're an ARMY! You have the way to word the letters, the political scientists will give you the ideas and the psychologists will tell you both how to sell those ideas! You don't have to be IN OFFICE! Be a conscience for your politicians, be an idea person to fill their empty and tempted heads with good ideas and plans.
joe438 · 61-69, M
@JollyRoger If it were that easy. Universities in MA tend to be left of center. Many of the faculty members approve of what the Democrats are doing. They like getting paid and aren't going to start telling their colleagues to move towards the center. Yes, you're right that all of us have to act and fix the problems we see. I try in my circles but this is a big problem that has been building for a very long time.
JollyRoger · 70-79, M
@joe438 You are right.... and I know one man can't change things by himself, but it's good to think about it.

@JollyRoger I was a US history teacher, the swithch you and Anti-American leftists cliam happened, never occured. On occasion a person or two will switch parties as we have seen 2 democrats leave the democratic party in the last couple of years. Sen. Robert Byrd, KKK grand cyclopes died in office as a democrat and Joe Biden called him his greatest mentor when he eulogized him. The democrats started the klan, murdered civil rights advocates, and filbustered the civil rights act to prevent it from being voted on. Years later, LBJ, after being questioned as to how he felt after passing the welfare act, he said, "We'll have these n!ggers voting democrat for the next 200 years." So cunuck cuck, you in fact, do not know what you are talking about. You are regurgitating leftist propognada you have read and have never lived it out to see the reality here.
JollyRoger · 70-79, M
@PhD2RuinYourLies So.... you're saying that the Democrat party didn't start out as a haven to ensure the continuation of slavery? - you said it yourself "they started the Klan'!
What I'm saying to you in case you couldn't understand it, was that over the years the Democrats went from being pro-slavers to freedom fighters for black people to try to equalize the social imbalance in US society. Now, as it is clearly demonstrated, the Republican party is the agency that is pushing the black people down under the guise that the taxes that are being diverted to efforts toward equalization of opportunity are 'hand-outs'.
I notice your close-minded and derogatory insult toward me... how in hell does 'cuck' fit into what I wrote? If you're a history teacher (which I doubt)... you are probably still flying the Confederate flag!

@JollyRoger Im telling you they started off as a party of slavery, and through rebranding their message, and trying to convince people of changed word meanings they have manipulated the most mentally weak among us to support their efforts to enslave the entire US population, and you leftist maniacs are too delusional and seething with misplaced hatred toward republicans to actually LOOK at reality instead of hide behind your screens and never face reality using any reason. The democrats have only changed in your minds, their agenda has ALWAYS been about subjugation.
JollyRoger · 70-79, M
Uh huh!... Subjugation! OK prof.... look up its meaning. Then look back to what President Trump sanctioned in Oregon about trying to use the National Guard to subjugate people. Yup... you're a history professor all right - short memory, self-serving, narrow-focused and confused. "....and The Land of The Free."
