Oh, and speaking of Iran, they were mortal enemies of Iraq and the two held each other in check. That is, until Bush made the Iraqi army disappear and freed up Iran to spend their energy exporting terrorism for the next few decades.

Meanwhile, back in Iraq (and Afghanistan) the US sorta ran out of the will to keep trying to be the civilizing force among people who hated us and our presence. Applying this lesson to the current situation, assuming Israel overruns Gaza, how will they impose order or civilization there?

They will not be able to do it with the world watching. The full force of the US military could not impose order in Vietnam or Afghanistan. Israel is intent on being more brutal than the US in imposing order.

@sree251 Agreed. Israel will not be able to manage a long term occupation. So is Netanyahu sentencing his successors to become ethnic cleansers and/or mass killers? That will quickly get ugly and unpalatable to Western powers. I just don't see any clean way out of this.

Neither do I. Israel is projecting a brave face of being in charge of the situation with US backing. We know what US backing is like. It's only there when things look great and magnanimous. When the tide turns ominous, Uncle Sam is gone.

Israel is in a pickle. Palestinian resistance is unending and no less determined than that of the Vietgongs. An oppressed people have nothing to lose. They are fighting for their dignity, their loved ones, and the very essence of their existence. Israelis will have to eradicate every evidence of Palestinian existence in order to prevail. In ancient China, the practice of Emperors were to wipe out three generations of a family (i.e. the offender, his entire family down to his grandchildren). This was to prevent any possibility of vengeance. This is what Israel will have to do to the Palestinians as a people. Not one left alive. Israel does not have the power of a Chinese Emperor over his minions. Even with US backing and all that show of force, Israel cannot prevail. No one is afraid of the US. No nation is safe from terrorist attacks.
